A AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600 has 0.18 Teraflops of power while a ATi Radeon 4870 has 1.2 Teraflops of power.......why is the Gpu more powerful these days, and why don't we make the cpu just as powerful?

read that and it will explain the differences in CPU and GPU construction, and why GPU's need more Tflops to do what they do, and why CPU's dont need as many.
supposedly a CPU has sequential processing with 1-4 cores and a GPU has parallel processing with 24-240 cores (stream processors) maybe this is why?........i'm suprised the gpu doesn't blow up with that many cores/processors
