gpu artifacts

What does it mean when my GPU starts to artifact? It doest do it on stock clocks, but when I start to push it, it wants to artifact. I didnt increase the voltage because I read reviews/guids on how to OC GPU's, and most say only increase voltage when I get freezes and/or crashes. Should I increase voltage when I start to get artifacts? My GPU is still well under it's warrenty, so if it's the GPU then im sending it back.

FYI, I use EVGA OC Scanner X and EVGA Precision X

Just something to try, when I had my GTX 580 it started to do that about once a week so when it did I switched the power connectors on the card. No idea why it did that. My card was also really touchy when it came to overclocking so I just left it at stock.
