GPU compatibility

Hi everyone,

I'm researching GPUs, and as far as I can tell the compatiblity is based on the port. Is this all there is to it, or are there any other things I need to check on? Oh yeah besides the power consumption.

HP Pavilion a1700n
CPU: Athlon 64 x2 3800+
MB: NODUSM3
RAM: 512KB x2
GPU: GeForce 6150 LE integrated card
I've got a PCIe x1 port on my mobo

What do you mean exactly? Port as in PCI-e 1.0 vs. 3.0?

Ok double checking http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&docname=c00757531#N379 I see that the expansion slot specs say PCI-e x16 and the layout pic says PCIEX1. Nothing on versions though.

Oh yeah I should be getting 1Gb x2 RAM on Wednesday. Maybe an Athlon 64 x2 5000+ if I win the bid. I'm planning on getting 2 more sticks if these first 2 work out fine. The GPU I'm just researching for now. Thanks for PSU info, I had forgotten about that. Should I go by volts or watts?

by brand, a good brand is a must with psus, and since it lasts longer it can be moved to a new computer in a year or 2 or whenever, look for a corsair, antec, xfx, pc power and cooling, nzxt, ocz, silverstone, or seasonic, those are all good. and wattage depends on the gpu you are looking at, but because of the cpu you don't need a super good gpu so a 500w should be plenty.

With an older board it may not even recognize some of the newer cards. Stick to gtx200 or older cards like a 9800gtx+ or gts 250.

Even this cheap corsair 430w could easily handle a gts 250-

But if you go for something like a gtx 260, you're gonna want the 500w.

Here's an 8800gts 512mb which was essentially a gts 250 with a slightly lower core clock-

They were great bang for the buck, and still are.

yes it still works, that just means the card can send and recieve data through the slot faster, but the card isn't actually fast enough to get a real benefit from that in games.

Ok so as long as the GPU says it is PCI-e x16 it'll work on my rig? Want to double check :)
