I am currently in the process of shopping for a video card for my PC. I never got a video card for gaming before so I am still learning about them.
I am currently running with:
-Asus M3N72-D Motherboard - NVIDIA 750a SLI, Socket AM2/AM2+, ATX, Audio, Video, HDMI, DVI, PCI Express 2.0,
-AMD Phenom X4 9600 Quad Core Processor
-SLI-Ready Dual Channel 4096MB DDR2 800MHz Memory (2x2048MB)
-Ultra LSP650 650-Watt Power Supply +12V 1: 38A
-no current video card
-(Vista tells me I have an experience rating of 4.2 out of 5.9 due to the graphics being low)

With this setup I am able to play Dragon Age on the lowest graphics setting without being "game-disc-breaking" frustrated. I have been looking at the Diamond ATI Radeon 5770 1GB, is my Computer able to handle it? or should I go with two cheaper cards using SLI or Crossfire

The 5770 doesn't seem like a bad choice. It also seems about in-line with your other specs. It probably won't bottleneck anything. ;)

My First Post - Plus My Two Cents

Greeting everyone, nice forum! Just joined today, and thought I'd add my two cents worth:)

I'd have to agree w/ the previous poster, I just purchased the ATI Radeon HD-5770 yesterday and I absolutely LOVE IT! It was a huge improvement over my extremely outdated Geforce 7600gs 512mb (sad..I know). I haven't done much PC gaming since I got my PS3 a few years back, but I think the HD-5770 is about to change all of that. In fact I just installed Battlefield Bad Company 2, and the card seems to handle the game pretty darn well (even when all of the in-game video settings were set to its highest potential). Just a little bit of choppiness at times, which are most likely due to limitations of my outdated cpu, or my settings in the catalyst control center aren't set correctly. But in short, I would say "yes" you should go with the hd-5770, or any 5700 or 5800 HD series card.

As an FYI; I'm using the card in a computer I built back in 2007. My current computer specs are as follow:

-Motherboard: ASUS M2N32-SLI DELUXE ACPI BIOS Revision 2209
-Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+
  • (Plan on Buying/Upgrading to the quad-core AMD Phenom II X4 940 BE 3.0ghz soon)
-Memory: 8GB OCZ-XTC-SLI DDR2-800 (400 MHz) [4x2GB]
-Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate X64 (64-bit)
-Graphics (GPU): ATI (1GB GDDR5) Radeon HD 5700 Series
-HDD: 1TB Seagate Barracuda/SATA @ 7200rpm
-Other stuff, too lazy to mention;)

The fact that this card runs well (not perfect), even using my old AMD 64 X2 processor is pretty remarkable. I actually thought about building a new computer, but can't really afford all the goodies I would want to buy. So instead I thought I'd just try to stretch the life of my good-ol M2N32 just a little longer, and upgrade it one last time. I'll update everyone when I finally upgrade my processor to the Phenom II X4, and let you know how it effects or improves game play using the HD-5770.

A question for you guys (I'm new, so if this should be in another thread please re-direct me:)):
Does anyone know of any other good graphics cards/or newer TV-tuners that can handle HDMI or DVI input, so that the video signal can be recorded from any HDMI-out device (I.E. Playstation 3), and saved onto my computer?

All of the cards I have come across seem pretty limited, and to be honest, the ones I have found seem really cheesy (As in cheaply made). Please let me know any suggestions you might have, or workarounds. I would like to record the PS3 signal in HD/1080p (record gaming video). I'd also like to record other 1080p/i signals from other devices. If there are any graphics cards which have hdmi or dvi inputs, can any of these be linked to the ATI HD-5770 using the "dual-mode" crossfire link?

Thanks in advance for your input/advice, I hope you guys can help me out:)

Hey Steve, welcome to the forum. I can't really answer your question, but if a previous thread hasn't answered your question, you're better off starting a new thread. Go ahead and try posting your question in the Video Card and Monitors section.

Also if you haven't already, have a look at the rules and other points of interest thread.

The Hauppauge 1250 has s-video input, no idea how it records PS3. It says it will record OTA HDTV and has built in decoders. $55 and comes with decent software and a remote. I ahve never used the record features though. I do like the card and software for general TV watching.
