Graphics card not working....

Hi

I've just tried to install a GeForce 5700Le graphics card for the second time after taking back my first one for being faulty. At least thats what the geezer at PC world said after I'd explained to him everything I'd tried. But I'm getting the same problem with the replacement!!?!? I think I might know what to do but I want a second opinion before I go ahead and do it. The mother board my Pakard Bell has is a columbia 5P. On their support web site it says there is a BIOS update for this motherboard to resolve an issue when there is a blank screen after intalling a new graphics card. It sounds like my problem but I'm weary about using a BIOS update incase I have the wrong mother board and it ****s everything up. Can anyone confirm that this is the way to go?...

What are the symptoms exactly? Everything is fine, only the screen is blank or the motherboard's BIOS beeps indicates that there' a problem vith the video card?

After disabling my on board graphic card I turn the computer off and install the new card. When I start up the screen is black with a small amount of text in the top left hand corner ie- GeForce 5700, NeVedia, 128MB - Then I get the Packard Bell logo with the options at the bottom ie- press [Esc] to switch screen, [F2] for bios.....etc. Then the screen just goes blank and wont boot to windowsXP. If I try to reboot over and over again occasionaly I'll get a very, very faint windowsXP start up screen but there is no green bar moving along the bottom.

What happens if you let the computer on for some time? The image never appears on the monitor?

Since it works in text mode, I think the problem is that the video card in (S)VGA mode sends some signals that are not supported by the monitor (unsupported sync mode or frequency out of range).
Let's see what happens with another monitor.

OEM computer --> what's the rating of the power supply? :) Do you know if the mobo supports the AGP 1.5/1.6v?

Hi

I've sorted it out, it was the BIOS update I'd found on the Pakard Bell site. I took it back to PC world for them to install it though, I didn't feel comfortable flashing the BIOS myself, if I'd have done it wrong I would have invalidated my warranty. Thanks again for the help though.

Ps - btw Lorand I did try it out on another monitor. I brought my PC into work and tested it here on a CRT monitor but no joy, thats when I decided to take it back to PC world. Also if anyone else has a columbia 5P motherboard and is having the same problem I had ask your supplier about the BIOS update 2.0A posted on the Packard Bell website 13/10/04. No-one at PC world knew about it even though Packard Bell are supposed to keep them informed with up-to-date news.

Glad it works now. :)
Packard Bell's products are fine, but their technical support sucks big time...

i would dis-agree with packers bells being fine. thier nick name is "knackerd bell" they are nothing but trouble.
saying that i used to be a packerd bell fan bout 2 years ago.

We had a Packard Bell at the office and it was the only computer on our LAN that never had any problems. It served us perfectly for 7 years, until it became obsolete...

thats because the packerd bell was older. all the new ones now are made from crap parts, so they are cheap and nasty hense why i was a fan
