Gray Flickering Monitor but external monitor is OK

Gateway Laptop Monitor. The entire screen occasionally gray flickers. I connected it to an external monitor. The external monitor does not flicker while at the same time the laptop monitor is gray flickering.

Is the problem the ribbon wire connection or the monitor ?
