Great firewall of Australia

This is Australia's biggest news site, http://www.smh.com.au/technology/te...e-over-net-censorship-20100330-r9bp.html#poll
In the poll, of over 30,000 votes, 96% of people do not support the government's internet filtering policy.
So in the democracy in which we live, how does the government, who is meant to represent the majority of people, go against the people in this way.
Senator Conroy argues the he is only attempting to apply the same restrictions placed on the distribution of books, magazines, DVDs and other content to the internet.
First of all, that sounds like an impossible task.
Secondly, looks like they plan on banning a lot more than the really bad type of sites they are talking about.

The internet is the last source of media which is mostly uncensored... the once they succeed in that, we are screwed... like in school, i know a lot of information has been surpressed.

On the internet you can find pretty much anything... once the govern controls it, certain things will be blocked... not for our safety or our childrens safety, but to control the flow of information. i don't like it.

Thank god Australia has no equivalent of the CIA (that i know of!) because i;ve heard about some of the really bad things they've done... not just framing people or controlling them. I'm talking brain washing, en masse. Brain washing people still in the womb. The sad thing is it's true.

And with a censored internet, i never would have discovered this, and the way that the world really works.

I think i've made my point...

When I heard about this I was really annoyed, and still am. Australia should not have this. Okay in schools, work places and such, yea sure because they want students and workers to stay on task, but to all of Australia, c'mon.
I read an article in a PC magazine (PC Authority) about censorship programs (I know it's not the same but still) for home uses, like parental control ones. And they said the kids, nowadays, can still find out how to looks at porn (I can say that on the forums right?), and that Google Images still works.
This firewall thing should not happen, we are not China!

From what I heard, looks like the US government is trying to talk the Australian government out of this foolishness, probably to no avail.

The US government already silently passed a bill forcing ISP's to give data usage statistics to the government... i guess that means taking action against piracy?

That passed? :(

I feel sorry for you aussies...not only do you have censored 'nets now, but from what I hear Telstra's data caps suck major balls...I hope Opera and its turbo function gets spread around down there. (speeds things up and cuts data usage by 80-90%)

TElsrta sucks, they overcharge and count your uploads towards your download limit. which is why my parents are changing to TPG. Double the data for half the price, and no uploads counted :D

Stephen Conroy is an ignorant *insert explicit words here*!
I'm honestly sick of the dribble that comes out of his mouth. Despite being told by numerous credible people that it's a bad idea he doesn't seem to care.

If I had a dollar for every time I've heard him say that...all he seems to do is dodge the questions regarding how crap the filter is and regurgitate that rubbish.

The thing that pisses me off the most is that the filter is going to cost something like AUD$40 million (I can't remember where I read that figure), our internet is already crap, especially in rural areas. The money should be spent on fixing that, not something that won't even work and will make it worse. If people want the RC material they will still get it, from P2P networks etc.

I think your government wants to censor you from reading all the completely unbelievable conspiracy theories:P The CIA is an intelligence agency, and while some of the things they do are questionable(eg- assassinations), brainwashing en masse is not really what they do...your thinking of the CIA like a propaganda ministry, while quite simply, they arent.

Ian, I'm going to assume that's a smokescreen. I'll wager that the US is asking Australia how they intend to go about it. I wouldn't be surprised one bit if Uncle Sam is drawing up plans to start doing the same thing here.

I agree on the "smokescreen", every government is afraid of the information we can now consume, the immediate live contact that can be made, the ability by us to get the facts from differing sources allowing us to decide the truth instead of being fed the "truth" that has been decided by those in charge.
We individuals now have a freedom of information never experienced by anyone before and all Governments will eventually try to police it. We are not being spoon fed information anymore and they don't like it.

If somebody is doing something bad and hosting bad illegal stuff, go after them and shut them down. I don't agree with this filtering nonsense and worse still trying to treat the internet like television and magazines.
If they are worried about children, there is software that parents can install, or if they are very young, sit with them while they are using the internet so they don't see it.
The internet puts power in the hands of the people, I think they are scared of that.
Whatever it costs, it will be a massive waste of money, because they wont be able to control the internet, there are just too many sites and too many appearing every day for them to have any control like they want to.
And it wont stop the bad people doing bad things.
What next, will they start to filter emails?

They have done quite a few very out-there things though. For example Project MK-ULTRA was an experiment involving mind control using LSD. One of the main goals of the project was to see if an individual could be "reprogrammed" with it, since LSD allows things to be relearned in much the same way that a child learns things. On the day that the files were scheduled to be declassified, the head of the department ordered the documentation to be destroyed, and took the heat for it. It's all in paper...check Wiki's sources:

The CIA may not be the Illuminati, but one would be naive to believe that they are who they portray themselves to be.
