Hey! I'm brand new to this site and computers. I just bought a computer from a friend but I'm not sure what to do with it exactly. I wan't to use it mostly for burning cds and dvds and checkin' out forums such as this one. My computer is at/at compatible and has 130,544kb of ram. Now, there is no security on this computer like norton antivirus or anything like that. Also I don't know how to find out what kind of ram i have. I want to install a cd and dvd burner but i want everything to work properly and not bogg down my computer. I'd like to do the work myself to save money but i need help.
(obviously) I know this is a ton but i really want to learn.:)

I payed absolutly nothing:cool: As for the system specs I ca oly give you what I get from the sandra lite program I don't really know exactly what you mean?

Read through Questions 101. It will give you the information you need to find out the specs of the computer. Without them, we can't really be too much help. The model of your motherboard would be particularly useful.

As Helmie said, if it's an older system, like a P3, it's probably using SD-RAM. You can still find it around, although it's more expensive than DDR. Worst case, it'll be using RAMBUS, in which case it's really not worth upgrading.

, there is no security on this computer like norton antivirus or anything like that.
Read through Basic Malware Prevention. You can download an effective antivirus program, such as AVG for free.

Why? Is this thing useless?
Not at all, for the tasks you've described it's fine. If you have the Windows CD, and haven't already reformatted the system, I'd start by doing that. You'll notice improved performance, and it'll elimenate any junk that's clogging up the drive.

Installing a drive isn't terribly difficult. Just set the jumper on the back of the drive to slave, and plug it into the IDE and power cables.

to be highly personal with you, you dont want it. on a slow pc an antivirus program can cause problems, trust me thats why i had to upgrade my whole system remember ceewi1, all them posts about hardware for quake 4, hehe.

:P and despite your remarks. my GFX card can play quake 4 on high settings with a reso of 1024x786 or suming like dat. but u were trying to help so i forgive u.
