i cannot get my internet working on my new computer. The connection status stays at: Acquiring network address. I have tried repairing the connection and it says invalid IP address...but my internet works on all other computers and xbox360s
my computer is a Dell Optiplex 170L

EDIT EXTRA INFO:
just recieved it from Blair Technology Group today. It was refurbished and i DLed every network driver from dell.com for my model.

to setup an estatic ip:
Assuming that u are running VISTA,
In another PC that you have the internet running,
Press
Start
Run
cmd
enter
ipconfig
enter
write down the ip,subnetmask, and default gateway
now, on the computer that doesnt have comunication with internet
press:
start
and then
control panel
View network status and tasks
just after conections press there
a new small window open then:
Properties button
double click in internet Protocol version 4 (TCP/IPV4)
click the button Use the following IP adress:
put the numbers that you writed down from the other pc
but in the ip adress you need to change the last numbers depending
in the subnet mask
for example, if the subnet mas is 255.255.255.0
you only need to change the last octec
but for example if you have 255.255.0.0 then you need to change the last 2 octets
so if you write down for example
IP Adress: 192.168.1.4
SubnetsMask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway:192.168.1.1

in this last example u can see that from the ip until the gateway
the number is the same except the the last octec because the
subnet mask only have the last octect as 0
so in the new computer u need to put everything like in the paper
less the last number that is a 4 ,so you need to change it to for example to 9
after filing this u still ned to fill thew bottom one
or else u dont gonna have acess to internet
In the Use the following DNS server adresses
need to put in the prefered DNS server the same ip as your default gateway.
But as lubo4444 and johnb35, if u cant get and ip from routter problably u have
some problem with your drivers, or you DHCP client service is not running in that pc.
If that is the case (no DHCP service) this configuration should work for u.

note that if after configuring manually the ip if u receive an notification with conflict ip adress,
u need to change that last number for another one.

that is connected to your router and the rest is the same

Is the proper driver installed for the network card? Have you tried using a different network card?

You don't have a static ip address set, do you? Right now its set at 192.168.168.99. It should be something like this. 192.168.1.1xx where xx is 01 to 99. Check your tcp/ip settings for the network card and change it to obtain ip address and dns server address automatically.

i went to TCP/IP Protocol and clicked properties, then set it to obtain IP address automatically...apparently thats not the problem because it is still having connection problems.

What about the dns servers? You need to change that too. When you get that done, reboot the computer. Then if you can't get online do the ipconfig /all command again so we can see whats going on.

Just click on the attached file so you can see where to go to change dns to obtain automatically. Also click on the advanced button on that page. Then open the other attachment, make sure that dhcp is in that box.
