ok, ive went and got ahead of myself. what do i need to do to get this new 500gb back to where i can partition and format for new os?
also, 7/64 needs 20gb, so is that all i should allow or would more be better?

I myself would partiton the 500 gb drive into 2 partitions.

1. 50gb for windows and programs
2. balance of drive for data

If you plan on installing lots and lots of stuff then you may want to increase that to 75gb.

The OS install cd will do all this for you as well so you don't need to do anything separately.
 
ive installed 7 then did a quick format because i decided i didnt like when and how 7 was obtained, so i quick formatted. but im pretty sure a partitioning was done when 7 was installed. so when i get the new sealed 7 i can just use that disc to set up the hd? and not planning on a lot of programs so i think 50 will be enough then(since you advised so..hehe). so partitioning @ 50 will give 2 partitions?

Always unplug any existing hard drives so they don't accedentally get erased during the install.

Always do a full format and not a quick, i've seen several issues come about by doing a quick format.

When you get to that point then click on drive options (advanced)

Then if you have decided to use 50gb then enter 50,000 in the box that appears after you click on new.

Then format the drive and it will install 7. After installation, you will need to go into disk management and format the balance of the drive so you can use it for data.
