GTA IV - Worth it?

I like GTA4 it's a different feel that the GTA3 series, but it works.

As to the annoying friendship system. Just accept the invite, then call them and cancel. You won't lose points like you do if you just flat out say no.

I have it on my PS3, so I can't comment on the PC version. While the game does go for more realism, it still had the GTA feel to it. What they dropped was some of the more crazy parts. I have a feeling that those parts will be back in future installments.

Vice City still may be my favorite.

Thanks tlarkin, I'll probably wait until GTA IV goes down in price before getting it.

If you want my opinion I would suggest Fallout 3 and Left 4 Dead as those are two really awesome games. If you want to go old school you can install Diablo II and play it to get warmed up for Diablo III when it comes out in 2009.

If you haven't played the original fallout games I strongly suggest them as well. Not sure if they will run on Vista though if you are running Vista.

GTA4 is not worth it in my opinion. Having played all of the GTA games, including the original over view 2D versions, I can say that this is simply a rehash of everything you have already done but with a script. There is a lot of voice acting in this one. The game itself is the same thing over and over again. I didn't even finish the game. I played about 8 hours or so into it over a two or three week period and then never turned it on since that time and ended up trading it in for Force Unleashed on my xbox 360.

First, and most annoyingly, is the friendship system in GTA4. You have to constantly take out the friends you meet to play pool, strip clubs, get a bite to eat, and if you don't then you piss them off and if you ignore them you piss them off, and if you piss them off you miss out on content in the game. You are forced to have a social life and they call you in the middle of missions at times. If you turn your phone off you can't do missions either. So, when you want to progress the game you have to make a choice. Either every 10 god damn minutes take out a friend so you don't miss out on content, or ignore them and progress the game and then you miss out on content and the perk that they give you.

The combat system is over simplified and non challenging. I feel like I am playing a game from 1990s. Now you can take cover behind things and blind fire which was nothing new and was widely used when the PS2 first came out. GTA4 is just now catching up to that concept. The targeting system is automatic, which I guess is OK for third person, but I feel it is way over simplified. Overall, combat is not a challenge at all, and you do the same thing over and over and over and over through out the whole game.

Multi-player is a joke. It comes down to who can get the rocket launcher first and kill every one. There is little skill since the aiming system ridiculous at times. It doesn't hold a stick to many other multi-player games that are already in existence. COD, CSS, HL2, or any other widely played FPS game that is already out are way better multi-player games than GTA4 could ever even dream of. Even when you turn off the auto aim in multiplayer it feels like I back in the 90s playing first generation FPS games.

The driving system is retarded. I am sorry but when I play a video game I want it to be fast, crazy, and I want to do tricks. Things I can't possibly do in real life because of how dangerous it is, that I don't have a stock pile of vehicles I can destroy, or that is really is physically impossible to do. The police system is also retarded. You drive two straight blocks and all of the sudden you are gone.

If I wanted that much dialogue I would watch a movie or better yet read a damn book. I think that Rockstar had many awesome ideas that came into GTA4 but overall they missed the big picture and that is games should keep your attention and be fun, with out all the extra baggage. If I wanted to socialize that badly in a video game I would just go out and meet people. The game also is nothing new under the sun and after about 2 to 3 hours of game play into the game, you just wash, rinse, repeat through out the rest of the game. The story of each mission may change slightly but it is a lot of the same old recycled content.

For the hype and production value put into this game it is boring, over rated, and really in all honesty not that much fun. I think the last time I played I got mad because every 5 seconds one of my friends was calling me over and over again to go out. Once I would take one out another one would call me instantly. I turned the game off and took it out of my xbox 360, hopped on the Internet to see what games were coming out in the near future. Traded it in to GameStop and picked up a new game.

My bottom line rating for GTA4 is 6/10 and that is because the game does have some great content, but only about 3 hours worth. After that you just repeat those same three hours over and over until game over.

You mean you can beat the game in only 3 hours. That is not too good of value,as most action or rpg games give you at least 9 to 14 hours entertainment first time through.

I think he means he stopped playing after 3 hours.

I don't know what the fastest time is in GTA4, but it can't be 3 hours. It's an easy 30 hr game I'd think. I'm not sure how much I have in it right now.

Of course I guess you could skip many parts, don't play in the city at all, and only do the core plot line and you'd speed it up.

No, the game is only original for about 3 hours, then you repeat everything over and over for another 30 to beat it. I quit playing it my friend finished it and when I would watch him play and it was the same recycled content.

The game repeats itself over and over but with different scripts almost the entire game.

GTA III was groundbreaking

Vice City and San Andreas simply milked all the hype from III, and that worked for those games.

GTA IV again tries to entice players with the groundbreaking gameplay that came from GTA III. Of course it boasts the new physics and graphics that are made possible from the 360/PC, but when you break it down it's like tlarkin said a rehash of the past GTA's.

Bottom line: The single player is a lot of fun, but nothing revolutionary. The multilayer while addicting at first, offers nothing to bring gamers back. So if there was a way of just getting the single player...well I just leave it at that. :D

GTA3 was okay but the best one has gota be Vice city. i duno, cant exactly say what it is that make VC so good. :(

well one thing i have noiced is that when a gta game comes out and its has a number for the title like gta 4 or gta 3 then its a new game engine. i think one thing that made gta 3 so great was that it was ground breaking in the fact that it was a third person game that you had free regin in the city to do what ever you pleased which is the main stay of the gran thief auto series.

as for vice city and san andreas, those were amazing games. san andreas was huge, you could do so much in that game it still blows my mind to this day. but if you realize that it was build off the the gta 3 engine then you realized that the engine had been around for a while so they had time to make san andreas os great. vice city too was build off the gta 3 engine.

now with gta 4 its a brand new game engine. there fore the game is limited compared to san andreas cuz they simply havent had the time nor expriance with this new engine. with this being said gta 4's engine is amazing. the game is by far one of the most realistic games out there i just wish i had a better computer to get the full experiance. but even on low settings the game was beautiful.

now i just beat the game so here are my experiances with the game. dont worry im not going to give away the ending. but i did find the game to be lacking in some areas. such as you cant fly airplanes but you can helicopters. which that isnt a big one but that is something i noticed. the biggest dissapointment thought was the lack of a military base and a tank. that was one of the things i loved most about hte older gta's was going to the military base and stealing the tank and driving off shooting everything in sight. well i cant do that =( but there is an attack helicopter which is nice but the only way i know of getting it is from cheats. another thing i found was lacking was in the missions. i hear from everyone that the missions are pretty much the same and in a way they are. pretty much every mission you have to go out and kill someone. but for some reason i didnt find it that boring but rather entertaing. but im sure in the following gta's the mission varities will get better.

somethings that i loved about the game. the overall apreance is amazing. by for one of the best looking games out there. i also loved the new way you run away from cops. when you get a star you have a circle to get out of before the star will start to go away. i love that cuz now i know how far i have to go to run away. its sweet. i also love how the cover thing works out. its kinda like gears of war where you use cover its just not quite polished but im sure it will get there. i also loved the gps thing i mean it doesnt always give you the best way of getting some where but it helps you learn the city a lot fast than prior games.

i guess overall i loved the game. and condisdering its a brand new engine its amazing but i was left feeling a bit empty so over all i would have to give it an 8/10 but i would recomend this game to any one that has played a gta before

the thing that i dont like about gta4 is its realism (socialising, new system of escaping cops...etc). dont get me wrong, it is a fantastic idea but for me, i've always thought of gta as a game in which you can crazy stuff which you cant in real life.

Thought I'd bump this for Omega, just to say that there is a new patch that fixes many of the problems/bloating, gains performance, and removes rockstar games social club!

Also, there is a moon at night now

Don't know why you bumped it, it didn't really need a bump. I bought it a while back anyways when Steam had it for $10 or so.

I would never pay $30-$40 for it, that's why I waited for for the price to come down to $10. I never play the missions, I just enjoy driving around :)

omg why is everyone dissing it?? i LOVE it!! i must say the multiplayer setup is a bit crappy but its still good if your in the mood for some racing or shooting some peps. The first missions on it are boring but then they start to get good. i cryed when roman died :'(

It is a bunch of the same old GTA, with crappier game play, the same lame combat, crappier driving, and a bunch of cry baby friends that call you and cry every 5 seconds to hang out and if you don't you miss out on content. The story line is so cliche and boring too, I think a 12 year old wrote it.
