Will I be able to play BF 3 on my 512mb gts 250? As long as I can play it smoothly on any settings I consider it playable.

Yes, wouldnt aim for a very high res or high textures but it should play perfectly fine, the 250 is no slouch. Although it would be an excently subject for a christmas splurge.

That's good, but I just realized that I have win xp and can't run bf 3... Is there any way I can run it in ubuntu? I heard about this wine thing, but I have no clue how to use it... Is it hard? if not can anyone please post a link to some good youtube tutorial showing how to do that?

Doubtful, but possible, but why not buy an upgrade for win8 for 40, it's very fast for me, just depends on your specs

I would if it was $40 for me, my win xp is 32bit so I would get 32bit win 8... and still not use my whole 9gb of ram... to upgrade it to 64 bit I would have to purchase a physical win 8 upgrade cd which is like $70, unless I can download the $40 update put it on a cd and perform a custom installation this way... can I do that?

I played BF3,medium settings,Motion Blur off, 1920x1080 on a 8800GT 512mb in my current setup while i was waiting for my GTX 670 to come,It ran fine...i cant remember the Fps i was getting but it was playable.

Your i7 950 should be plenty powerfull,Your motherboard is SLI capable and you have a decent Power supply,Why not pick up another GTS 250 cheap used and go SLI?

I would if it was $40 for me, my win xp is 32bit so I would get 32bit win 8

Where you hear that?..if you buy it on their site,You can choose 64bit.

What I meant is that my xp is 32 bit, so the $40 upgrade would upgrade it to 32bit windows 8, but there is a way I can upgrade my 32bit xp to 64bit win 8. I purchase an upgrade cd, because then during installation it asks me which version I want to upgrade to, but a cd (not the $40 download) costs $70. So in conclusion:
32bit os -> win 8 64bit = $70 upgrade cd
32bit os -> win8 32bit = $40 upgrade download (w/o having to buy a physical cd)
If only my xp was 64 bit I could upgrade it to 64 bit win 8 for just $40 bucks. My question is if I download the $40 upgrade and put it on a cd (not use the upgrade assistant) will I be able to perform a custom install, or do I have to buy a $70 upgrade cd burned by microsoft?

Oh, and I thought about buying another gts 250 but then I realized that I might as well sell my gts 250 for $40-50 and replace it with a gts 450 which is also $50, so basically I can replace it with a 450 for free. But as I said in another thread I'm gathering money to get a gtx 480 so I think I'll just wait until I can get the 480 (or 570).
