how does this perform in games?

Mainly ones like CoD4, L4D, TF2, MW2 (when it comes out), CoD5, mass effect, mainly CoD4 though? What sort of settings will it be on (obviously dependant on other system parts, but if it was in a top system and that was in) and what FPS increase would you see over an 8600GT when on the higher setetings?

It will be quite a bit better than a 8600GT. The 8600GT was pretty much a dog card, why do you think they came out with the 8600GTS so fast afterwards. For 8 series card it didnt perform much better than the 7600GT.

The GTS 250 is just a renamed 9800GTX+, so they perform about the same. Pretty equal to a ATI 4850.

Since you have a SLI board, even if the 4850 was a tad better I would go for the GTS 250. You could get another one later and SLI them.

3 years i have had my 8600GT for, it will be the same time before i upgrade again so either the mobo will be redundant or the card will so it will be pointless SLI, with only one card and only ever one card which would be better?

Oh, and my board only has x8 PCI-e slots when it is in SLI, x16 when single card, so having SLI gives very little performance increase

Actually a GTS250 doesnt even eat up an entire x8 pci-e slot... Notice how a GTX295 can run fine on an x16 slot? Id go for whatever you can get for cheaper, as they are neck and neck in most places...

Really they are pretty much dead even in performance. Which ever one between ATI and Nvidia you feel comfortable with. Just pick the one you like of each and go for the one with the best price.

I just got a gts 250 and with the specs in my sig I can play COD4 at max graphics without any lag

I'm talking pretty much solid 60 fps if I recall correctly

same with COD5

and I'm running windows 7

I think the only nVidia card that would be choked by an 8x slot would be a GTX 295.

You could run any other nVidia card in an 8x slot and not notice a difference between a 16x slot.

awesome, that is loads of help, thanks alot :D

Running 2x8600GT there was no performance increase at higher graphics, it still couldn't handle it and the fps raised about 5% over a single card, so sort of pointless seeing as how it should near double performance of a single card

That could be drivers, power supply issue, etc all kinds of things. What kind of improvement did you get in 3dmark06? Plus the 8600gt isnt very powerful to begin with, so sli wouldnt give THAT much of an improvement..

drivers were up to date, PSU is corsair and only a few months old and 850W...my system doesn't use that mcuh :P so that is fine.

3D mark, i dunno, I like using benchmarks for OC and that is it, everything else, you do the upgrades for real use situation, not for benchmarks, if it is awesome in a benchmark and crap in games then what was the use, you didn't get it to go "wow that is an improvement.....on paper"

Hmm, well i know for sure the 8600gt wouldnt be limited by an x8 slot(That would mean something like an 8800gt which is over twice the power, would be limited by an x16 slot) so i dunno why you didnt see an improvement, how many different games did you try? Some games just see very little to no improvement in SLI.
