It all depends on your motherboard if you want to utilize crossfire/SLI to eventually run 2 or more of these cards. The 280 is better than the 4870 by far but there are also 4870 and 4850 version that have 2 gpu's in one card respectively called 4870X2 and 4850X2 That match up if not go above and beyond the GTX280. The 4870X2 is a bit more expensive but seems to perform about the same in pairs as 3 280's in SLI depending on your setup/overclocking etc. From what i see crossfire boards appear to perform goofy in a triple setup (x16 x16 x8, x16, x8, x8) where as SLI boards seem to run in full 3 x x16but i havent really in depth research so any expert help would be appreciated. But overall i'd say if you wanna go highend "future proof" go with a 4870 or a 4870X2 for extra performance. Plus if you get an AM2/AM2+ board you can get the new processors AMD is planning to send out where as with the new Intels, youll need to get a new mobo.
