GTX 280 or 4850 in crossfire

Not clear enough? Okay, I was simply asking what makes two 4850's outperform the GTX280. Is there something to back that up or is it opinion?

the 2x4850 would be noticeably better, but with most current games you'll max out with either of the choices.

STOP!

Are you kidding me?

The GTX 280 performs about the same or better in most apps than 4870s in crossfire! Two 4850s....the GTX 280 will crush it! There is only like 3 games two 4850s perform better than one GTX 280....The Lost Planet.....who plays that?

If you can not take 3 minutes and do a little research and give somebody the best advice.....DO NOT POST!

I can understand if the 280 is about the same as dual 4850s but two 4870s definitely better than one 280....if you put the numbers together to compare, two 4870s win...

You can get the new HD 4870 1 Gb card for around $300 or so and its vista 1920 X 1200 or higher res. price/performance is excellant

Best price performance ratio right now is GTX 260! Performs better in about 60% of all apps than the 4870. And the price is dropping! Some apps are in favor of the 4870 and some for the GTX 260. Just depends on the game or application. The GTX 260 with 216 processing cores has not yet been bench marked and posted, I am sure it will dust the 4870 in most apps.

EVGA GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 for $280 (I think this will this thing will crush a 4870)

Quote from Tech Spot "The real clash today between the GeForce GTX 260 and the Radeon HD 4870 ended up with no definite winner"

Here is just one example of one GTX 280 beating two 4870s in about 50% of all apps. I understand the 4870 is a great card, I might buy one myself! The 4870 in cross fire is a great setup....but it takes two of them to beat the GTX 280. But I am all about numbers and benchmarks! Let's get real, buy 2 4870s and have no room to upgrade in 4-8 months or buy one GTX 280 and buy another in 6 months? What do you consider the best option?

4870X2 is currently the fastest card out there, and yes it does outperform the 280, which leads me to believe that two 4870s in crossifre would outperform the 280 as well. 4850x2... not sure, I wouldn't think it beats a GTX280 but I'm sure it gets close.

Scout, I was referencing the HD 4870 1 Gb.Did you check the link to the benchmark I had provided ?

*edit Btw I am neither a ati or Nvidia fanboy.I buy on price to performance basis.I have owned a Nvidia geforce 2 ,7600 gs(currently using),ti 4200, ati rage, and a 850 pro over the years.I personally buy for that reason .I think people who only buy one brand due to loyalty are not taking advantage of a free market and only hurting themselves in the end.Jmho

This is all I am saying.... Guys like him just throw stuff up here without even looking at a benchmark.

The original question was "what better, 2 x 4850 or a GTX 280?"

It drives me crazy when people just answer a question and have no idea what they are talking about. All I trying to do is answer the original question.
