Gtx 460 + 8800gt (Physx)

Hey guys,

I have a few questions,bullet pointed.

I currently have a GTX 460 768mb graphics card,Its awesome!,But i also have a Asus 8800GT Graphics card lying around unused.

  • Do you think pairing a GTX 460 + a 8800GT for Dedicated Physx would be a good idea?

It would mean id have to get another mobo with 2x Pci-e X16 slots but on ebay there are occasionally good deals and i could sell my old one.

  • Also would i still get DX11 if i used a DX10 card for Physx?

  • Would the 8800GT bottleneck the 460?

  • Could my power supply handle the load? (OCZ StealthXStream 600w)

Thanks

Yeah, nice idea.
You would still get DX11 if you had a DX10 card running solely for physx (I think)
No it wouldn't bottleneck it, because it's not putting the pixels on the screen, the 460 will deal with all the games and stuff
Yeah, should be fine.

also, getting an 8x/8x motherboard would affect performance by 10% (negative) at most, and they're a fair bit cheaper than their 16x/16x counterparts. But whatever, if you can find a good price for a daul 16x one, go for it :)

Whats everyone else think?....really worth it?

Ive got my eye on a ASUS Rampage Formula X48 Chipset Motherboard with 2x Pci-e x16 slots.

appreciate your answers fastdude :)

I would say no, it isn't worth it. For now, a GTX460 is enough for anything, with or without a dedicated Physx card, so I would save your money for a bigger upgrade.

If you had the motherboard here and now with SLI support, then I would absolutely say yes, however, buying a motherboard for a socket without anywhere to upgrade to, I would say no, not worth it. Keep what you have now, because the C2Q is still a great chip and more than capable of doing anything you ask of it, and with the 460, will play any game at all. I would save the money though for when hex or octo core CPU's

1. fall in price

and 2. becomes a necessity as quad cores won't cut it any more (like dual cores are now)

At that point, spend the money that you would have spent on the motherboard on a more up to date motherboard, with a little more spent on the CPU and memory to go with it.

Even if you can pick up the board for quite cheap, I would still say it isn't worth the upgrade for the price

There's no point for a dedicated PhysX card with a gtx460. Very few games use PhysX anyway, and if they do the gtx460 can handle it anyway even while processing the graphics better than an 8800gt would do seperately.

My point is that Mafia 2 runs cloth simulation on the CPU unless you have a GPU dedicated for PhysX. Also, if you have SLI it runs all the PhysX on the CPU, unless you have 3 card: 2 for sli and one dedicated for physx.

his point is that even then, the 460 can probably still handle the physx better than the 8800, which is probably true. someone needs to do some benchmarks... :P

I'd like to see that to, when I had the GTX 460 the Physx in Mafia 2 cripples that card, so be neat to see the difference.

^ Mafia 2 ;)

I don't play Mafia 2 anymore...there's nothing interesting in the DLC to keep me occupied. :o

I cant believe that,The GTX 460 is a powerhouse.

768mb or 1gb?

Theres hardly any difference between the 768mb & 1gb versions of the card, according to Anandtech benchmark results....the 1gb version is only ahead by about 3-6 fps in most of the games they tested -both cards stock clocks.

I now have my 460 ocd.

Looks like il not bother with the dedicated Physx then unless i can somehow by a miracle find a very cheap SLI 775 board, they still go for about £50-65 though on Ebay.

Wait...how much bandwidth does physx use? Would putting it in a 1x slot work? That would keep the x16 slot from being cut in half...

You may have to cut the back out of the 1x slot, but as long as your southbridge or some other component isn't in the way, it'll work.

Not sure what you mean there?

I tried to do duel 460s w/ an 8800 as a 3rd card and had problems with heat.

really ,Well i only have 1 GTX 460 and its runs about 31c idle,i dont think airflow would be a problem.

A x1 slot comes up in the back, it's not open so the card won't slide down in. You'll need to use a dremel or something to cut it down.

Ah now im getting it ;),Come to think of it now,i don't think it would be worth all the hassle + damaging the mobo in the progress.

If id have had an extra Pci-e slot id throw it in without a doubt

EDIT:Just noticed as well i probably wouldn't be able to fit the card in anyway because of where my Pci x1 slots are,The one is right next to my Pci-e x16 slot so thats out,the other is right down the end of my mobo and the 8800gt wouldn't fit because of its Glaciator cooler sticks out too much and would hit the top of my Power supply lol.

I would say what you are doing is unpractical. Kinda like the saying goes, if its not broken don't fix it. But wheres the fun in that? :P
