The data on the VRAM is the same for each card in a multi card SLI so the memory for GPU 1 and GPU 2 are identical. GPU 1 will not go to GPU 2 memory to find the data that it needs to process. Each GPU will only go to it's own memory to find the information that it needs for processing. Since both of the GPUs are processing together, the memory needs to hold the same information. That is why you have (physically) 2gb of memory on the PCB but only 1gb usable.

that is how SLI or X-fire on a cards are advertised....as the total ram on the card, but you have to use a little common knowledge that sli uses the amount of ram on one card...so its 1/2 the total.
