The lowdown on the GeForce GTX 570 is pretty straightforward: performance on par with a GeForce GTX 480, power consumption and noise levels on par with a GTX 470, and a price tag of 350 bucks. The card's stock cooler is nice and quiet, too.

Whereas the GTX 580 took a two-tiered approach on raising the bar on GPU performance while simultaneously reducing power consumption, the GeForce GTX 570 takes a much more single-tracked approach. It is for all intents and purposes the new GTX 480, offering gaming performance virtually identical to the GTX 480 at a lower price, and with less power consumption along with lower temperatures and less noise. As a lower tier GF110 card the GTX 570 won’t wow the world with its performance, but like the GTX 580 it’s a solid step forward. In this case it’s a solid step towards bringing yesterday’s performance to the market at a lower price and with power/thermal/noise characteristics better suited for more systems. If nothing else, NVIDIA has translated the GTX 580’s excellent balance of performance and noise to a lower priced, lower performing tier.

Furthermore at $350 NVIDIA is the only game in town for single-GPU cards for the time being. Until an AMD competitor comes along NVIDIA has done a good job of filling the gap between the GTX 580 and GTX 470, an action very reminiscent of the GTX 470 and how it filled the gap between the Radeon HD 5870 and 5850 earlier this year. With no single card alternative on the market right now the only competition is the GeForce GTX 460 1GB SLI and the Radeon HD 6850 CF

When the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 graphics card went to store shelves back in April 2010 it had an MSRP of $499 and while it was fast it was criticized for being too hot and power hungry. Here we are eight months later we see the GeForce GTX 480 becoming discontinued and eradicated by the GeForce GTX 570 1.25GB video card. The GeForce GTX 570 costs 30% less at $349.99 and offers an improved cooling solution and performance that is right around the same as the GeForce GTX 480. Obviously, the GeForce GTX 570 is the better video card as the price is lower, the card runs cooler and the performance is not significantly different. Compared to a GeForce GTX 470 the new GeForce GTX 570 blows that card out of the water as we saw a number of benchmarks where the GTX 570 was more than 30% faster.

Our opinion of Nvidia's $349 GeForce GTX 570 changes depending on the frame of reference. Compared to Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 480—the short-lived flagship—GeForce GTX 570 is a home run. It’s faster, cooler, quieter, and less expensive. Relative to GeForce GTX 580, the 570 performs and is priced appropriately.
We know that the GTX 480 is already off of Nvidia’s product lineup, and we have to imagine the company is anxious to discontinue anything currently based on GF100. That means the 480 will need to drop more than $100 to even be a consideration. I can’t imagine value-seekers touching it anywhere north of $300. The 470 already saw its massive haircut ahead of AMD’s Radeon HD 6800-series launch. At $250ish, that’s a fairly appropriate price.

Conclusion
We must admit to being taken by surprise by the release of the GeForce GTX 570 1.3GB so soon after that of the GeForce GTX 580 1.5GB, but it certainly makes sense. With ATI dragging its heels for whatever reason over the HD 6900-series cards, Nvidia has been presented with a fantastic opportunity to corner the high-end market, and with the GTX 570 1.3GB it’s hard to bet against the green team.

The performance of the GTX 570 1.3GB is roughly on par with that of the GTX 480 1.5GB, but it’ll depend on game engines as to which is faster. As we saw in Black Ops, some games will take advantage of 1.5GB of video memory, and this can let the GTX 570 1.3GB down a little. For the most part the performance difference in speed between the ludicrously hot, loud and pricey GTX 480 1.5GB and this quiet £300 card are slight. When the engine is more sensitive to GPU processing power rather than memory, such as in Bad Company 2, the GTX 570 1.3GB proves the quicker.

Thermal performance was as good as we’d hoped, having seen the improvements brought by a vapour chamber cooler with the GTX 580 1.5GB. Even power consumption was excellent, marginally undercutting that of the GTX 470 1.3GB despite a substantial performance jump.

Wow, GF110 is really starting to look good.

So what about cards like the 565, 560, 550, etc? When will those be released?
I hope the 560 will have as much value as the 460
