you really need that much power? On what resolution do you play? 1 gtx670 should be plenty if you're playing on 1920x1080 or a bit larger.

IF you need CUDA/Physx, then 2x 670 will out power 1 680, but at a $1200 budget, you can do 2 680s.

If you do not need CUDA and Physx, then you can grab 4 7950s or 3 7970s and be far ahead too.

This hd7970 from ASUS should outperform all 680's.
If you get 2,3 or 4 of them, you got a really killer system.
It has a 6600mhz memory clock and 1100 engine clock and can be overclocked pretty damn high! It's made for overclocking, "ASUS ROG MATRIX 7970: world record-breaking overclocking and gaming power"
The cooling gives you the option to overclock like no other.
In stock it beats every single card, in CF it just destroys everything.
And like you said, it's 599$, it's in your budget :p.

that said, every of those cards (gtx670 SLI, hd7970 ghz ed. and gtx680) will fit your needs for sure.
