GTX 960 error 43

My friend recently built a new rig with a gtx 960. Everything worked fine for about 3 months. He said he was playing a game and his resolution suddenly dropped. I went into the device manager on his pc and it says error 43 the card has been disabled on his video card. I tried re-installing the drivers but the card won't enable. Does anyone have any ideas?

Problem with the card or corrupt registry. Try totally uninstalling drivers along with the driver software and then download the latest drivers and software from nvidia.

I did the driver thing and the card still doesn't work. At this point I'm assuming the card is physically broken. I think he still has it on warranty, so getting it replaced shouldn't be an issue.
