Is there anything I can do to my pc or the game settings so I am able to play Guild Wars?
No offense but I busted up laughing when I read this thread title!
As mentioned, dial up is barely acceptable for basic internet functions let alone any form of demanding internet intensive action such as gaming.
Hopefully they offer dsl where you are!
glad I could amuse you with my unfortunate situation...nothing but dial-up is available at my location...
If you select quiet servers such as the Korean server then you may not suffer from large amounts of lag that you may get from 60 odd people being in a main area.
However a server in Korea is further than a server in your area (probably) so some lag may be evident but most likely less than in a busy server.
Finally when entering a new area (you may already know this) you download around 3 megs of data for that area so be prepared to wait quite a while when zoning.
Overall you should be able to play but prepared for team mates to complain when they have to wait for you to load the area and cope with your lag.
hope this helped
even an empty server won't help with lag when you are talking speeds this low, he won't be able to keep up with the packets needed to be sent/received
I understand how you would get to this conclusion as dial up is extremly slow in comparison to even the basic of broadband options.
HOWEVER if you read the technical section (near the middle of the whole page) http://www.guildwars.com/products/guildwars/features/default.php
you will see that GW was designed (partially) for those with dial
up.
If I were you I would buy the first GW see if it's any good connection wise.
Hopes this helps in your final decision
You send me a link to an independant site or source showing nobody has ever had problems, or atleast the vast majority have not, and I will believe you. Not saying you are wrong, I understand that it isn't only throughput that affects your ping and lag, but your overall speed does play a huge part in it and in this case because it is dial up, I would say the factor is too large, especially when in a city with thousands of other people, it would just grind to a halt
must have been a hard question
i took the gamble bought it and played it fine with my 256mb of RAM and my
geForce fx 5500 256mb graphics card,
i got a RAM upgrade anyway, so itll run even smoother
so if any one else was wondering, if you have dial up...go buy the game
its worth it

ya i agree i have dial up and it runs smoothly. the only down fall is that there are many people there that use teamspeak and ventrilo (team communications programs) and you can have them running at the same time or it creats lagg.
about what acexzy said bout communication programs, i have dail up and run ventrillo without a problem, but i cant run teamspeak, ya just gotta find the right communtication program
I would think the only problem would be your dial-up causing game lag for other players. I havent played Guild Wars but our servers freak out when we get a couple dialers playing MOH with the rest of us.
