I just upgraded my old computer to a new one:

CPU - AMD Athlon 64 3200
Videoe - GeForce 6600 gt
Mobo - msi k8tneo2
ram - 512 ddr 400
hd - 80gig 7200

running my hd on NTFS system.
When i play Half Life 2 im also running Mcafee virus scanner.
===============================================
Now.. everyone tells me that this new computer is a solid choice, and yet, im having problems with it.
When i play Half Life 2, on 1024 by 768 (all high) and some big explotion happenes, or something else my cumputer stops for a split second and then continues to go. sometimes it can stop for a split second 3-5 times in a minute, like its getting annoying. Although i see perfect graphics and my fps is from 60 to 250 or something. I tried to change graphics, desable virus scan, whatever, i still get all those lags with this brand new computer.

does anyone know what could possibly cause that problem?
i have a few theories
1 - hd should not be in NTFS system
2 - for some reason when i go to BIOS it shows that my RAM runs 200MHZ, and my CPU 2000 MHZ... should be 400MHZ and 2200 MHZ. But i dont want to get into overclocking yet. maybe mobo setting are incorrect.
3 - not enough ram, although, when i try to use dual ram (2 by 512 sticks) it ****s up and does not work...
4 - video card
5 - slow cpu

help... i wasted 1000 on those upgrades and it works worse then my old p3 933 with gefroce mx440 video card :(

1. ntfs is fine, i use it and it work fine with hl2.
2. mabey, im not sure though....
3. i personaly think this is it, it seem most likely, althogh 512 should be enough
4. that video card should be fine
5. i have that processor, its fine

also, see what processes you have running, mabey you have a virus or spyware/adware, try reinstalling the drivers, try reinstalling hl2, other than that, im not sure.....

we have about the same computers. can u play half life 2 or source with no lags. like my needforspeed undrg. 2 FULL graphics just flies.

its the RAM, when i had only 512mb ram, the games froze for a few seconds when i played hl2 and farcry. Getting another 512mb should solve this problme completely.

Maybe you need a faster internet conection? unless your tlking about 1 player. then try running it in lower resalutions and see what happens.

Doubt it.

If a cpu reads wrong speeds then bios settings need to be checked.. Your ram is supposed to be running at 200 as you have one stick installed.

You really could use more ram for this game. If you have another stick then put it in, It's not like your running duell channel at the moment anyhow. Also what SKT do you have? 754 has no duel channel support where as the SKT 939 does. Also you'd benifit more from another 512megs of ram even without duel channel support.

4 - video card
5 - slow cpu

both are fine.

Do you have this type of problem with any other applications/games? That might help answer the problem, because maybe its just a thing with H2. Just a thought

sometimes it happenes in cs source (very rare though) and even cs 1.6... speaking of fps i always have 100 in 1.6 and 60 to 180 in source. as of half life 2 its between 250 and 60 80... basically the whole STEAM lags on my computer, but hl2 does the most

im running ungerground2 on 1280x 1.... something resolution and goes perfectly.

maybe i need more ram, but when i try to put in another stick of ram (in dual combination) then nothing works... when i use only 1 512 stick everything works fine. maybe i should try to use 2 512 sticks in no dual mode. dont know whats wrong with my mobo using dual.. both sticks are exactly the same, only diff name.

What do you mean nothing works? Computer wont boot? Are both sticks compatible? I'm assuming your chip is a SKT 939?

yeah, 939.
when i boot my pc with 2 sticks in dual combination, windows runs but no program will work. ive never seen that before. say i go to explorer it closes the window right away. i go to steam - all my games are gone. i take one stick off and everything works fine again

Wow that is odd indeed. Is it safe to assume you installed windows xp with one stick of 512 and then added the other afterwards? If so then maybe you might want to try installing the other then reinstalling windows. I know this sounds odd but your situation is an odd one :). Just a thought anyhow.

are you serious?... wow. i hate Windows now

Don't get me wrong I'm not saying that is the problem. As a matter of fact if it is I'm willing to bet its extremely rare but your problem is a strange one assuming you have 2 good and compatible sticks of ram. I've added ram as countless others without a problem with windows of course. but when you add a second stick of ram like that and a problem like that arises then I would try reinstalling windows myself is all.
