when im playing the game, i was in the hovercraft and then the game minimaizes to the desktop and i get the error "fail to lock index buffer CMeshDX8::LockIndexBuffer" does anyone know how to fix this? what is going wrong?

thanks

The answer right off of the support site for Steam/HL2 goes as follows.

Indications

The 'Failed to lock index buffer' error will occur when you Alt+Tab to switch between windows while playing a game and your machine is unable to allocate sufficient memory to render graphics when you switch back to your game window.
The best solution for this behavior is to properly exit the game to return to your desktop so you may work with other applications.
ATI Video Card Users

This issue may also be related to an outdated driver for your video card. To address this issue, it is recommended that you uninstall the current Catalyst drivers, then install the Catalyst 6.2 drivers.
Download the ATI Catalyst Uninstaller

Whenever there is a specific error message in a game the best place to look for an answer is at the support site if the game has been out for any lengthy period. Half Life 2 and other Steam: Source games are latest drivers needed type games along with the alt-tab combinations of keys being pressed. Even though you may reassigned default settings this is their answer.

That's one thing about HL2 that can be a real annoyance at times. You will be just starting the Steam engine with the usual double click on the shortcut to not only the usual update but get the message that you need the latest Catalyst version installed. That's nice until you find out that the latest update is past those you can use on the model card you have installed on your system. In most games it was Alt + Enter that saw a game minimized.

thanks...but i didnt minimise it myself, the error did. so ill update my gfx drivers...but this is on the laptop, not my rig, seeing as mine isnt running just yet...damn school. but i will try those things out...thanks guys

Ut oh! Laptop? what are you using for video? onboard? ! HL2 is one of those games that loves graphics as well as memory. It can pull down hard on onboard if you have the settings and resolution up high.

yer i was just testing it out, im not runnning it on here, just had to try a mod that i downloaded to see if it was the working version or not. cant wait to get it fired up in my comp :)

Besides the occasional lock like every other game ever played besides the original 8 bit Duke Nukem and Nukem 2, well Wolf3D included, has been seen enough times with HL2 but not Episode One. But so fat I haven't quite run into the type of error you have been seeing there. The updater simply stopped the game from running whenever a new Catalyst came out.
