Ok, so my computer (desktop) was giving me a message upon booting that said Unknown CPU Type and not allowing it to further boot. So i figured maybe its just dusty and not getting good contact. So i took it apart, cleaned it, and put it back together. Now when i boot it runs for about 5 seconds before turning off and it makes this really obnoxious alarm noise. . .i have no idea whats wrong someone help please???

probably overheating, did you put the heatsink back on correctly and the fan for the heatsing is plugged in and runs

yeah, the heatsink snaps on and its really hard to get the snap on so i know its good, and the fan is rediculously loud so i would know if that wasnt working right. and since its happening within the first 5 to 10 seconds of booting it leads me away from overheating. . .

i booted it today and it said CPU has changed or is unworkable. .something like that.

You may have bent a pin on the CPU or socket.

Did you clean the cpu and heat sink and reapply thermal interface material?

If your fan is running so fast that it's loud, it may mean the CPU is too hot.

Just because the fan is working doesn't mean everything is right.

no its loud because its a .76 amp 12 volt tornado lol. i didnt put any of that cream back on there because there was still a bit there that i didnt wipe off, but if you think it makes a big difference i will go buy some at Frys. . .i can check the pins on the CPU and see if they are bent. could it be that there might be dust inside the socket for the CPU and its breaking contact?

well i know what im doing as far as taking it apart and putting it back together, im just not sure what all these messages mean when i boot it. . .but its an old computer so im thinking that maybe its just time for a new CPU altogether. . .its an AMD 2200. . .

Oh dear. That "paste" that comes on there from the factory is not multiple use, my friend.

Once you unseat it, you need to reapply it. Especially that hard crap that comes stock.
What you've got is tons of air spaces now.

Anyway, as I said, this may or may not be the issue, but it's something
that's worth eliminating to move on from. The paste is usually less than
$10 for quality stuff.

Dust will definitely cause problems, but be carefull cleaning the socket.

Use a can of compressed air and GENTLY puff on the socket in short bursts.

Don't shoot it straight in there, as the socket 775 is a Land Grid Array, consisting
of 775 little hairlike "pins" that could easily be bent with too much air pressure,
or if you accidentally poke a pin with the air nozzle.

If you have an AMD socket, they're a bit more forgiving. I don't know which you have though.

well its an Abit NF7 Mobo. . not sure which type of socket but i would assume its AMD. i didnt buy this computer pre-built. . my ex-stepdad and i built it ourselves about 8 years ago, hes the computer genius, i was just along for the ride. but its not factory stuff, its the good stuff, thats all he used. i just havent taken then heat sink off in that long. . .
