Hangouts SMS

Is anyone else having trouble with the Hangout SMS? I am trying to send a text and it keeps defaulting to a hangout chat. When I tap the persons name it is not even showing their phone number yet it was under their contact when i selected them.

Anyone know how to fix this?

I didn't even bother trying to learn it. Immediately downloaded Handcent SMS when I got my Nexus 5.

Downloaded the app and that fixed it right up. I like googles apps but i don't like what they did to texting. Good thing android lets you change just about anything

That was one of the first things I did was to change the default sms app from google hangouts, it confused the hell out of me, and it kept flipping between screens, did not like it at all. They should keep them as separate apps in my opinion. Also if you are sending like a thousand messages a day using hangouts, well maybe thats an exaggeration, but I do send a lot, I don't want to run the risk even though it may be small that messages get sent as a paid sms instead of a free hangouts message.
I have used gosms pro, and it does the job, but there are probably much better solutions out there. I also hate how they force you to use google plus to send images via hangouts.
They just take every opportunity they can to try and force you on to google plus.

I must be one of the few that actually like hangouts 2.0 text integration, my phone runs jelly bean but i downloaded the 2.0 apk to try it and have found it much handier to have all my communications in one place.

If you have a hangout chat and texts from the same person, it is clearly divided into 2 separate communications, any sms text has sms written on the contact picture.

When you click on a contact to send a message, before you write the message click on their name at the top and you will get a drop down menu that lets you select a hangout chat or phone number to text or call.

I might have stayed with hangouts for sms if i could find a way to block sms from certain people, but I dont know if that is a feature which is available, at least I couldnt find out how to do it. That is something apple got right. call and sms blocking with ios7 was excellent.
I have had to rely on third party apps with android.

Yes ian you do have to use 3rd party apps to block calls and texts, but they may add that feature in future.

I don`t have need for blocking specific people, but i would like to be able to turn off androids built in messaging altogether as one flaw is even if you have read an sms using hangouts, it still sits in built in messaging as unread.

There are a few people I wouldn't mind blocking.

Overall it worked well. Just cannot spend all day figuring out how to fix the missing text option that should be available when I click a name up top. So be it.

You can block numbers through your carrier as well, I believe with Verizon you can do it right on the website.

I am not sure that you can do that in Australia. The process last time I looked was very complicated, you had to go through the courts or something ridiculous like that.
And in any case, the call blocker doesnt really block anything, as the annoying caller, can just set their number to not display and you get a call from a private number who you dont know it is.
