hangs at shutdown

Am running WinXP sp3, and computer hangs at shutdown until I manually close a program that changes name each time I shutdown. They have strange names like c20, 13a4, eb8, etc. Also am experiencing occasional problems with cursor in WinEx as it will just stop working and I have to shut the computer down with the power button and restart to keep using computer. I have downloaded Malawarebytes AntiMalwarePro and it found some problems but not the one I am having. My other antivirus software, Trend Micro, is no help. Also am experiencing some slow down. Thanks for your help.

Maybe try AVG anti virus coz it definetly sounds like a virus...

Got malware?

Download all of the rkill files found here: http://www.technibble.com/rkill-repair-tool-of-the-week/ - put them somewhere you can find them later - I suggest C:\Temp. Then download Malwarebytes Antimalware into the same folder as the rkill stuff. Then download HijackThis! and AVG Free into that folder as well.

Now, reboot the computer into Safe Mode (as soon as the computer starts up, press F8 repeatedly until you get a black-and-white screen with several options, and choose Safe Mode.)

First, go to the folder where you downloaded everything and run rkill.exe. If you're not able to, then try running one of the other rkill files. After you've run one successfully, then open the Malwarebytes Antimalware (it will be called mbam something) file, install it and run a full scan - remove anything it finds.

Then reboot the computer again into Normal Mode and run HijackThis! - post your log back here, as well as how many instances of malware Malwarebytes found and removed. And then wait on orders.

You should also go to Start-->Run-->type 'msconfig', <enter> and go to the Startup tab and choose "Disable All" - then go to the services tab and check "Hide All Microsoft Services" and click "Disable All." Then reboot, shutdown and see if it still hangs. We may have to have you go back ad re-enable some processes, but let's take care of the problem first.

I'm the one that told you to come here from annoyances.org.

Please follow the instructions on how to post the log from malwarebytes and how to download and post a log from hijackthis.

Open malwarebytes, click on the logs tab, open the log that you recently ran that had infections and then copy and paste the entire log back here in a reply.

Then do the following.

Hello, please download and post a log with HiJackThis.

Click here to download HJTsetup.exe

Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Have you installed any programs recently?
I had this issue with my vaio xp sp3.i installed a program and until i removed it it wouldnt shut down properly and would freeze up

You are definately infected and have way too many programs running on bootup. We'll take care of both problems. What you downloaded wasn't Malwarebytes software at all, you have downloaded a rogue program. Follow this procedure very carefully.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here or here and save it to your desktop.

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
- Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
- and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Please keep updating until it says you have the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

If you continue to experience problems after doing this, please post a HijackThis log by doing the following:

Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log

Ok, Malwarebytes didn't catch it. Let's run combofix.

Download and Run ComboFix
If you already have Combofix, please delete this copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.

Download this file here :

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
Then double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

John ... I didn't realize that there was a page two until this morning ... sorry about the last post. I did load ComboFix and have posted the current log below, and also the current Hijackthis log. Computer continues to show a strange program running at shutdown with strange names which change each shutdown. Other than that it works fine, but the shutdown problems continue to make me concerned about an infection. Thanks for working with me. JPB

1. Go to Start > Run > type Notepad.exe and click OK to open Notepad.
It must be Notepad, not Wordpad.
2. Copy the text in the below code box

3. Go to the Notepad window and click Edit > Paste
4. Then click File > Save
5. Name the file CFScript.txt - Save the file to your Desktop
6. Then drag the CFScript (hold the left mouse button while dragging the file) and drop it (release the left mouse button) into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below. Important: Perform this instruction carefully!

ComboFix will begin to execute, just follow the prompts.
After reboot (in case it asks to reboot), it will produce a log for you.
Post that log (Combofix.txt) in your next reply.

Then please rerun hijackthis and place a check next to the following entries.

Then click on fix checked at the bottom.

Reboot the system and then post a fresh hijackthis log. Also, you have adobe acrobat version 6 installed. Thats a very old version and needs to be uninstalled and the new version installed. Download the latest version here.

Just make sure you uncheck mcafee security scan before pressing download.

When you come back please give me an update on if your system is still hanging at shutdown.

John ... I found that ComboFix wanted me to shut down my AVG antivirus scanner. I couldn't find any way to do that short of removing the program from my computer which I would rather not do. Any ideas? Thanks, Jeff Benson

Just ignore it and run it with avg enabled. But FYI, all you have to do is go into advanced settings and disable resident shield.

JohnB35 … I think we got it … actually YOU got it. Thanks so much. I ran ComboFix with AVG running and ComboFix got all the way thru to Completed Stage 50 and then I got BSOD … yuck! So I ran it again with AVG shut off per your instructions and this time it completed and generated a log report with I have included here. Following that, I got a proper shutdown which I have repeated a few times to be sure we are there. Please see the following reports/log from ComboFix and then Hijackthis. And again, thank you so much for helping me regain my computer back again in good running condition. I have a very old image I made over two years ago that I was real hesitant to use as much has changed since then, but now will make a new image and promise to keep it up to date. You guys do great stuff!!!!! See reports following … Whoops, found again that I need to send the two reports in 2 separate messages. Thanks again for saving my butt! JPB
