Hi guys,

My hard disk now opens with the 'open with' list after a recent deletion of Kavo.exe which is found as a virus threat by my AVG anti-virus software.

I have deleted the trojan and also tried restoring my system but i couldnt undo it. System cant restore i don't know why.

My external hard drive is also facing the same problem. i tried formating them and it still is.

PLEASE PLEASE help me! I am using XP pro. I find it very hard to live with such IRRITATING problem!

Thanks In Advance.

Sounds like you could use a Welcome to the Computer Forum there! http://www.computerforum.com/70672-official-welcome-thread.html and just a reminder to new members to review the http://www.computerforum.com/52038-forum-rules.html

With an infection on the drive you wouldn't want any restore points left that could reinfect the system. The first step with viruses, malwares, etc. is to turn off the system restore feature in order to see all restore points deleted. Meanwhile besides getting nowhere with the Disk Management tool in wiping the external drive the main file is gone while the apparent damage to Windows was done.

You should probably try a drive partitioning tool like Partition Magic or the free Linux tool GParted live for cd in order to delete the infected primary from the OS host drive(internal) and later try reformatting the external when a fresh copy of Windows is running on a cleanup drive. You have to assume other files besides MS files were or could be infected if that was some type of I-Worm virus.

With Windows infected and out of commission you would use one of those to remove the infected partition on the external drive if detected. Tools like GParted live run totally independent of any OS installed on your system since that loads and runs from a cd-r not from any internal hard drive.

As far as Windows you have a choice to reinstall a fresh copy for deletion of the present or even wiping the host drive to avoid anything still left on the drive there. That would clean off anything remaining while wiping everything out. If you are certain the OS drive is totally free the other option for the OS drive would simply be a repair install to correct the problems seen when trying to reformat the external if the Disk Management tool was toast as a result of the infection. These are the main options.
