Hard Disk not recognised- help?

Hey guys, a few years ago I had loads of songs saved on a Creative media player deely and long story short it did itself a firmware upgrade and lost everything.
My old media should be backed up to this old IDE hard drive i've got, and I've hooked it up to my system to try and grab the old media files.
In windows my computer the hard drive isnt showing up, and i desperately need to get these files now for something i'm doing later :/
In the BIOS basic settings its showing up on IDE Master as Maxtor 160GB etc etc so it is just Windows that isn't recognising it.
Am I missing something? How do I make it work?

NB I had a DVD drive hooked up to the IDE port until now so it definitely works.

Thanks :/

- i have just opened disk management and have clicked 'Import foreign disks' cos it said it was 'foreign'. Its now telling me it needs to be formatted before use, which i can't do because I will lose what's on there obviously. I tried to access it and it said error-cyclic redundancy check.
Any ideas?

It means the hard drive most likely has errors on it or has failed. Download and run the manufacturers disk diagnostic program. What brand hard drive is it?

hey johnb thanks for your reply, however i have successfully backed up the folders using an undelete tool, it's all good now. thankyou for your help
