hard drive back up?

Greetings all,

.....Hope everyone had a decent thanksgiving and also remembered the less fortunate and the troops around the world.

.....I am at a disabled vet's home out of state and helping him with some computer issues. he has a dell desktop, win xp, plenty of ram, etc......i am putting in a 300gb hard drive along with his existing 180(?)g hd......

.....***what he wants to do is back up his existing hd to the other AND, have it do automatic back-ups possibly 1x per week....those back-ups simply overwriting (adding to) the existing (such as changes made) hd.

.....what programs are out there to do this?...names would be appreciated....THANKS FOR THE HELP!

thanks for the replies BUT,

**i want;

1... to take existing hard drive(#1) and make a COMPLETE FUNCTIONING BACK UP to hard drive (#2)....

2... then, to use "a program" to write to the back up drive (#2) incrementally as the data on the primary drive(#1) changes possibly adding to and overing data.

3...imaging is one thing but not what i am looking for. i can use macrium reflect to do a simple drive to drive copy and that is good BUT BUT BUT, (see #2).

Use Macrium Reflect for an image of your drive and also use Second Copy to write your data daily (or whenever) to your backup drive. You do not have to use Second Copy. Google for others. I mention it because this is the system I set up on my computers for backup and it works well.

....i have it but, will it do INCREMENTAL hard drive back-ups as i described?
The free version does not do incremental backups, I don't think.
But when it's possible to back up my entire 50GB C: partition's contents in just 3 minutes, is incremental necessary?
By comparison, an entire 160GB partition would take maybe, what, 10 minutes?
Just a thought.

For the money, I would upgrade to Windows 7. For $100 you can get a much better OS with the functioning incremental backup build it.

I have not heard of software that will do exactly what you want, especially with point #1 in conjunction with point #2. Is there some reason why you need the 2nd hard drive to be a fully functioning, real time, immediately usable backup? Explaining why you need this may help us assist you in possibly a different direction.

thanks for the reply...never heard of "second copy" but, will look at it later this evening...when you say "write your data daily", will that do what i need it to do = to write new data/e-mails, etc to the 2nd drive which is a cloned drive of the first?

in my initial post i did NOT indicate the changing of operating systems but, that i was looking for specific software, and to work with WIN XP....

...thanks anyway...

ok, sorry you have not heard of any

.....n/a...should make little to no difference

Explaining why you need this may help us assist you in possibly a different direction.
...it probably would not...thanks anyway.....
