i dont no if this is the right place to post this. i work for a dentist office and he wants to be able to back up his files onto an external hard drive. this is easy enough. i was wondering if he could backup his office hard drive from his house? still havin the ability to backup in office but if needed just go to home comp and back up onto external from there.

Yes it is possible, just take the external hard drive home, or install this thing called VNC, you will have to find out how it works through the readme, I don't want to go into details, but you can log onto other machines that you have set up to it from your house, you just need to leave the computer on. Or try logmein, also excellent.

He can operate the office comp from home over the internet using a service called Go to my PC. Backing up taking the drive home isn't going to backup the right files.

the easyest way would be, if he wants to take the data home then to put all the files on the ex-HDD, or to take the HDD out of the office computer when he goes home and put it back in the next morning.

Backing up taking the drive home isn't going to backup the right files.

Of course it will, when the computer is off ALL data is on the HDD, therefor, if you take the disk home, all the files will be on the drive and your able to access from a different computer. how do you think data recovery is possible?

he plans to take an external home with him i just thought maybe i could make it easier for him to set up a remote pc that could be backed up from home so that he never has to fear forgetting the external at the office. he mainly just needs to backup patient information. cant her share the files over the remote and click allow others to alter or move files?
