Hard Drive Cables?

Hi.

I got 4 hard drives. Two [80GB] 10krpm 16mb cache Western Digital VelociRaptors and two [500GB] 7200rpm 32mb cache Hitachi UltraStars.

How can I connect these hard drives to the motherboard? I'm going to be doing RAID 0 with the VelociRaptors and RAID 1 with the UltraStars.

What's the best cable to connect the hard drives to the motherboard? SATA cables? Or is there anything faster? Are SATA cables the same as SATA2 or what? Sorry guys...I've never connected a hard drive to a motherboard before in my life...I hope it's easy. :o Do I also have to connect them to the PSU or will the motherboard supply the HDDs with enough power?
 
i'd seriously recommend you get into computers some more before trying something like raid out.

anyway it's not like you can pick a cable. the hard drive is either ide or sata. IDE is wide and has lots of pins. Sata is small and doesn't have pins. both of them just connect to the mobo can't make a mistake it only fits one way.
And yes you need a 4 pin molex for your ide or a sata power cable from your psu depending on your hard drive.

Except for the raid connecting hard drives is easy just make sure to turn the computer off first.
 
Why do I have to get into building computers to learn about SATA cables? :rolleyes: That's why I asked here, at a forum...

So I'm going to need SATA cables even though they're SATA II hard drives?
And since there's 4 I need four right? They all connect to the motherboard?

And the motherboard supplies the power right? They don't connect to the power supply individually do they?..
 
i was talking about getting into computers for the raid. raid isn't easy.
anyway yes you need 4 cables and they will go into your motherboard as long as it has enough ports. I'd check that if i were you.
and the hard disks do connect directly to the power supply with a black sata kindish cable just a little bit bigger.
 
So WHAT KIND of cables do I need then for 4 hard drives?
4 SATA II cables? Or are SATA cables and SATA 2 cables the same thing?

And 4 power cables? I need to know what to look for on eBay. :( Good prices from people from hong kong :D
 
Any SATA data cable will work. The power cables will run from your power supply. With the Velociraptors, you'll need two SATA Power Connections coming from the power supply, or molex to SATA adapters. Most modern power supplies have SATA power connections, so you shouldn't need an adapter. Same with your Hitachi drives. Some hard drives allow for either a SATA power connection or molex connection, but you do not need to use both.
