Hard drive coolers

Has anyone used these? I have noticed that my hard drives are hot. I have a external I cut open the top and put a 80mm fan on it. I have been using it for close to 5 years...no problems. I have been told not to fan my hard drives...but it just dont seem right to run them hot.

It depands on what you think is hot. For seeing temps 30C or less possibly a little warm but not hot. If you are seeing 40C+ !

I considered trying those out at one time or another but simply found keeping the case in general cooler like running an Antec 900 with more then one HD in here seems to work well. The twin 120mm front intake fans see to that nicely. :D

I like too have too many hard drives. I now have 5 external drives and 3 internals drives. 2 TB+ now. So its getting warm in there...but not crucial yet. I need to get a fan controller with a display soon.

I have 2 80mm running in the front and one 120mm in the back...and 2 80mm on the side panel.

At least you are seeing more then some cases with only one 80 in front and an 80 or 120 for the rear fan. The side fans help more with video and sound cards and maybe memory somewhat simply since there's a little more air flow.

Five external drives! You must have all usb and eSata if used ports tied up unless you are trying a hub or two there.

Despite running occasional video captures that chew up drive space fast plus save all types of files, updated drivers, MS updates, jpgs, wav files, tons of freewares being tried out I never seem to quite fill a 500gb model completely while coming close at one time seeing 420gb taken up with video.

On the one external drive here(500gb as well) the Vista reinstall folder only takes up just under 21gb total. XP files are also stored there as well along with some video and audio. You must have quite a bit to store there.

I am using the 5 back usb ports on the board. I installed a 3 usb/2 firewire card. The monitor has 4 usb ports. I added a 4 usb hub. the keyboard has 2 usb's. and 2 front of the case usb's. One drive is a firewire. The other 4 is usb. 1 ide drive on the inside...and 3 sata's inside.

I hear that one. The lcd here sees a few ports as well as an IPod docking port plus the head phone jack, volume control, and s-video input. I should get a hub since all ports on the back are used as well as connect the few on top of the case as well as an eSate port seen there.
