Hard drive crashed... need to recover "LOST FILES"

my HDD crashed a while ago and i since restored the partition and tried to used active@ recovery and found the files and restored them to my other HDD and when i access any restored file it says theres an error. eg. pictures have no thumbnail and says preview not available.
no file will open.

then i looked on my at my "stuffed" HDD and scanned again and it had all my files in the LOST FILES folder... lost all there filenames...

what has happened ???

i have been able to restore some files(pictures) and it views 1/2 the picture if that.

i've tried a few different programs.

what i have done is delete the partition i created and now the HDD is "RAW"

what do i do next ???

what step should i take.

do i have to create a partition in order to retrieve the files?
or can i recovery them while the HDD is on RAW status?

all help will be greatly appreciated !!!

Welcome to the forum! Please be sure to read the rules :) and introduce yourself on the welcome thread.

Deleting the partition wasnt the best idea as that removes the data. There are some programs (none that I know of that are free...) That can still retrieve the data though. for example, I use "GetDataBack" which works well. for future reference, don't delete the partition if you want to retrieve data :)
