Hard drive dead?

Hey,

Windows will not start complaining about a missing or corrupt file. I booted from the xp cd and ran chkdsk and it said that it found one or more unrecoverable errors.

I guess this means my hard drive is.. dead?

How can I get the data off the hard drive and will I need to buy a new hard drive (If so, could you recommend me a good hard drive that won't fail after just over a year!)

Thanks,

Tom

I got that problem a while back when my Memory was playing up, you would have to plug the HDD into another computer with a Hard Drve already in so you can copy your files off it, but other tha that try memtest86, it will test to see if your memory has a fault.

This isn't a sure sign your drive is bad, but it is possible. If you purchase another HD, most manufacturers offer software that will copy one drive to another. Alternately, if you can simply back everything up, a low-level format will sometimes fix problems such as bad sectors. I'm assuming this is what chkdsk came across...

Well I have had problems with the hard drive before (Same thing about windows cannot start) but chkdsk fixed it... also it keeps saying my registry has been restored by using a log or alternate copy, so I assume this is because it was corrupt or damaged.

If it's talking about the registry or something, it sounds almost like a software rather than hardware problem. Have you tried other hard drive scanners? Perhaps from from the HD manufacturer?

When I boot up now I get (From the BIOS):

3rd Master Hard Disk:S.M.A.R.T. Status BAD, Backup and Replace.

Ill scan with some hard drive tools from my manufacturer.

I had that prroblem before.. something like "c:windows/ntfs" or seomthing, it was the RAM, the RAM wasbad, and if SMART says that then its probably right... but 3rd? arent you supposed to boot from the 1st HDD?

It counts my floppy disk drive & DVD-RAM drive as bootable devices.

Plus its:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\system

That its complaining about.

Download SpeedFan, go into the S.M.A.R.T. tab, and it will tell you what aspects of your hard drive are bad.
