Hard drive errors...

Hey guys. I got a 2 TB WD external hd for christmas. It worked alright (I think) when I got it. Now, it loads very slowly, and causes my computer to really slow down. I got on auslogics disk defrag and hit analyze, and it said it had errors.

So, I ran the repair function, and the results aren't pretty. Basically it is unreadable and there is some error that stops it from even finishing. I'll post back the results of chkdsk shortly. However, what will I need to do if it is errors? Will formatting and starting fresh fix this? Or will I need to send it in and get it replaced?

Thanks.

Or just right click on it in Windows and go to properties and use the tools to do a disk check.

Usually when a hard drive starts having issues like that it's on its way out. I would just see if you can get it replaced under warranty, if not try the above and don't store anything important on it lol.

Alright that's about what I figured. I guess I'll see if I can find somewhere to back up my stuff. And then get it replaced.

1. Save ALL your data from that external HDD before it's too late...
2. Format that HDD using the DOS tool called Kill Disk. You MUST run it from the real DOS environment...
3. Go back to Windows and create the new partition on that HDD and see if it works...

Report back with the results...

Cheers!

I like what STARS said (kill disk is pretty good), though I would also get in touch with the manufacturer of the disk and tell them whats happening. They may be able to replace it for you at little to no cost, especially if you just got it in December.
