Hard drive failure?

Something really wierd happened to my computer today. The power plug somehow got disconnected and everything got turned off. When I connected everything and tried to start my computer, it didn't work. It got past the IDE check but then it just displayed some type of prompt. Then nothing happened. I can't enter BIOS either. When I try, it only displays some type of hardware list and then goes to the IDE check. I was told that it could be a problem with the hard drive. What do you think?

If it were me, the first thing I would do is disconnect the hard drive(s) and reconnect them, then power up. This has solved similar problems for me in the past. However since you said you can't even access the Bios it might be that your CMOS needs to be cleared. If you are not familiar, generally its a jumper on the MB you reposition. Some MB manufactureres have you remove the battery on the MB in addition to repositioning the jumper for 10 secs. You might also try disconnecting your hard drives and leave them disconnected, power up and see if you can access the Bios. Does your keyboard use a USB connection or is the old style PS2 plug? If it is USB sometimes it won't work in certain circumstances to access the Bios because the USB has not come online yet. If it is PS2 and you can't access the Bios then I think you might have a CMOS problem. :)

Does POST detect the HDD's ? If you were defragging or something it could have damaged or corrupted the HDD.

I'll try clearing the CMOS as soon as I've figured out how to remove the battery. I can't really see if the HDD is detected. The list disappears too fast.

If you have a really fast computer sometimes it is difficult to get into the Bios because the computer blazes past that option at boot up. Especially if you have a USB keyboard that has not had a chance to be recognized yet. That is why I mentioned the PS2 keyboard. Even then sometimes you have to keep tapping the delete key as soon as it begins to boot to get in that door. The battery socket usually has a little release tab that you push outward to release the battery :)
