Computer Specs:
Motherboard: Asustek 845E
OS: Windows XP
Updates: Service Pack 1

I recently purchased a 160Gig WesternDigital Calvier Hard drive to replace my 40 Gig hard drive. When I reinstalled windows, windows partitianed my drive to be 130Gig.

Problem: How can I get the full amount of the hard drive i Purchased? Basiclly my motherboard, the bios doesn't support large hard drives past 130gig.

Attempts:
I have tried intel application accelerator and it says the hard drive is at 160gig while if you check in my computer, it is still 130gig.

I have also updated my bios to the newest avaliable on the asus website.

I have installed the CD that came with the harddrive to later find out that it has no use.

I Hope someone can help me with this... Gracias

That chipset should support it fine ... you'll still have a 127GB partition limit from windows i think :) so to make use of the extra space youll have to partition some more :)

I've been reading about this issue everywhere and it seems to be very common.
from what i've heard, i think its sp1 or sp2 allows this hard drive bypass limitation. So what if my primary[old harddrive] running on sp1, installs windows on the 160gig new hard drive. then i run primary boot on the 160... would it still come out with restriction or would it bypass because i installed windows with the sp1. sorry if this is confusing... i just really hate having gigz at waste

SP1 allows you to bypass a detect limitation of accessing the space although to access it you will still need to make a new partition :)

Of the three solutions the only really viable one is the third one which isnt horribly useful. XP does however come with a a parititon thingy:
Control Panel --> Admin Tools --> COmputer Management --> Disk Management
Its no Partition Magic but it allows you to tinker around :)

Why not just keep the 40gb hd too? Then you would have 170gigs, even better than 160. And it is already in 2 "partitions"!

with XP the max hard drive you can have is 127GB, therefore if you have a larger one you have to partition it to have, say, a 120 and a 40. I ran into the same problem with a seagate SATA 160GB. I partitioned it through

Control Panel --> Admin Tools --> COmputer Management --> Disk Management

So why not just have windows on the 40Gb, then have a 120 and 40, or 60 and 60...hope this helps

that's not entirely true, one of the guys I go to school with got a 160gb hitachi sata drive and he had the 127gb, after some checking on hitachi's site we got it to have 1 160gb partition.

well thats what i ment, but thanks for that...i bought a 200GB and it is a secondary drive, i partitioned it to be one giant 190GB, or whatever it is ;)

Oh indeedy however it is important to note that 'for people just interesting in poppin in a new drive and getting things up and running' it's consistently true [enough]. You can definitely ratchet past the 127GB limit though (otherwise corporate users wouldnt be too happy)
