Hard drive manufacture question

I saw the pinned post by John35 about hard drive diagnostic utilities and have a question. I have a Toshiba laptop that will not boot. Long story. I removed the hard drive and would like to use my hard drive enclosure to test it via another PC. It connects via USB. On the Toshiba site they show diagnostic utilities for Fujitsu drives. The hard drive shows no labeling that indicates it is a Fujitsu drive, only Toshiba labeling. Are Toshiba hard drives made by Fujitsu? Very confused.

Just download the program and run it and it should test the drive. However, I remember there were some issues with some drives not being able to be tested with that program. Not entirely sure why though. These OEM's need to stop using drives from Hitachi, toshiba/fujitsu and just stick with either Seagate or Western Digital.

Amen to that!!!

I downloaded and tried to run the utility. When I selected run, I got the following: "Administrator authority required for test execution". I am logged into my PC as the administrator.

Also, don't know if this makes any difference, but the hard drive is from a windows 7 laptop that is connected to a windows vista desktop via a USB enclosure. I choose the the utility that said it was compatible with vista. I hope I chose the right one.

OK, I finally got it to open the utility. It shows both the drive of my desktop and the Toshiba drive. I try to select the toshiba drive and it will not select. FYI, it will not allow selection of the desktop hard drive either. Its like its non functional. Not sure what to do at this point.

Well, as my luck would have it, this utility says it does not support USB, which is how I have it connected to my PC. I ran chkdsk /f/r and it came back ok. So for now, I am assuming that the HDD is good. My next step is to place the HDD back into the laptop after I format it and load 7 back onto it, reverse the RAM upgrade to the original RAM, and go from there. Will post the outcome soon. Was doing the chkdsk /f/r a test that would be ok under this situation?

As always I value your input and opinion. So, anything you feel needs to be added, please do so.
