hard drive not registering all its space?

I'm trying to format my friends harddrive and reinstall windows. His drive was pretty screwed with errors, so I took it to my computer to fix it. For some reason its only registering as 7 gigs, and its a 160gb hdd. Any ideas?

What kind of errors are we talking about? Were they all software or hardware? How's it showing in the bios? Or when you try to partition/format it?

Well, it got partitioned, and then the partition somehow got corrupted, and it turns on, but never makes it to the windows logo. Can't even get into the bios, just keeps rebooting. The same thing happened to my moms hard drive, and I just connected to my comp as a slave, and Vista detected the error and fixed it. This time Vista says theres no errors. It's just really weird that only 7gb out of 160 is showing up...

if you right click on my computer... go to manage... go to disk manager... is the space unallocated? you can probably do like the other one said and just reformat it and set the size of the partition to the full size of the disk.

Thanks cheburns! It turns out the rest of the space was just unallocated. It's formatting now as we speak:)
