Hard Drive Opinion

Ok my HD is screwed and I wanted an opinion on the HD i'm going to be getting. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148451
This is about the price range I can afford, I was going to go with a cheaper one but when I noticed the free shipping it would really only be 2 dollars more than the cheapest one on the page..lol
It seemed to have better benchmark and rating than all the others in that price range. I have been using an 80gig for years now and have never filled it up so the 250 is plenty enough space. I saw the same one on Tigerdirect/campusa website for 39.99 so if I choose this one I'm gonna call and see if they have one in store so i dont have to wait for shipping..lol
Anyone have another suggestion?

Also 1 more question...I hear that heat is the main cause of HD failure, is that true? I mean it would make sense cause my computer has ran hot for the past year until I got a new case a few months ago and the HD is only 3 years old.

Seagate makes good drives. I have a 7200.12 drive in my NAS and it's been working fine for the 5 months I've owned it.

Just make sure you don't get a 7200.11. Even if it's past the firmware issues, we've had mutliple 7200.11 1.5TB drives die recently at work. These were only about two weeks old and not affected (according to Seagate) with the firmware issue.

Cool thanks, BTW how much difference does a higher benchmarked HD make in real life situations...like gaming etc...That one rated a 747 or something close and the one i'm using now rated like a 380 or so. Also mines IDE and this ones SATA which might be alot of the difference.

Helps i we know what benchmarks you're using :P I can't test my drive, though. It's stuffed in my NAS; Linux based and all. But in general, Seagate drives aren't meant for performance. They're more for reliability, stability, etc (HAH...at the 7200.11's :P). If you want speed, get a WD Black or Raptor.

So it looks like it can be slow or it can be fast depending on what I am doing..lol Well it has got to be faster than my 3 year old cheapy WD. Now I do have 1 other option I just found out about...A friend is willing to give me a velociraptor...good huh? Well it is only 75gigs which I could still use and it is at least 2 years old if not more. Hmmmmm

Velociraptor is good. Since 80GB is enough for you, I would guess 75Gb will serve you find as well. I don't see the need of you getting new HDD if your friend give you that one

That raptor will be nice. Wow, you're one of the few that can get away with such small storage. I'd fell an 80 GB in less than a week.

Velociraptor is a monster in speed. It runs 10,000 rpm which is very good for gaming. I have the 300gb and I am impressed with the speed and quietness. Try it and be surprised like I did.

I have been using a 300gb velociraptor for 6 months now and man I am very much impressed with the speed and quietness of it. 10,000 rpm is such a monster. Go ahead and try it, it is free anyways :)
