Hard drive/other hardware question

So a friend of mine gave me his laptop to work on, cause its all ****ed up.
Anyways, I got everything ready to do a reformat on the damn thing.
And as soon as it asks me if i want to proceed to install XP, I press enter.
Then it showed me a screen saying that there wasn't any hard drive discs detected.
So common sense says, the hard drive is done.
Could all of this have effected other hardware as well? Or will I just find out after I change the hard drive?

Laptops usually run in ahci mode. XP doesn't have any native drivers for it so it can't detect the hard drive if its running on a controller that has ahci enabled.

Go into the bios and see if you can change the sata controller to either IDE/compatibility and try installing XP again. If there is no option to change it, then you will have to slipstream the sata controller driver into a new install cd.

Cant, it wont let me start up. It will let me turn it on, and boot up the xp disc, but as far as anything else. It wont let me do anything at all, I tried going into bios earlier, and it wont let me do that either.
