a few days ago when i turned my comp on it wouldnt boot up but instead has the message....load needed dll for kernal..or something similar to that. so i figured i would just take the easy route and use my recovery cds to reformatt everything and reinstall it all...i didnt have anything important on it anyways that i cant get back on it. but when i tried that and i tried a few times to run it and it always get to about 92, 94% percent done and starts haveing errors saying files cant be copied and its the rest of the files from that point on....there from X:/windows/1386.... i belive so or something like that. i was told that a sector in that drive is just out and i need a new one. its not a big deal ill go buy one but i want to know if thats wat it is before i go out and buy soemthing i dont need.
any ideas?

It's not necessarily the hard drive. When you tried to install windows did you format first, and if you did, did you choose quick or full format?

ya. before it starts it asks me if i want to format the hard drive and i chose yes and then it ask if i want to fully reinstall windows back to factory settings and i chose yes..its windows xp if that matters

Assuming that your recovery disks do a full format, it will scan for bad sectors as part of the process. If it does a quick format then the scan is skipped.

Can you try again and copy down the exact error and post it?

i can do it again. i have done it a few times and it stops at the same point everytime and ive done it before and its worked and it was a full reinstall takes almost 4 or 5 hours to do it. but around 92 percent a little window pops up and says error...files cant be copied and its a bunch of files in the x:/windows/1386....... and i can either retry or ignore it and retry doesnt do anything and ignore just goes to the next file that cant be copied and its well over a few hundred files like this

You also checked to make sure there was not a scratch or something on the recovery dvd's, correct?
I think that may be the problem too. You could also try a different CD/DVD drive if you have one.

ive tried 2 other drives and nothing
and the disks are perfect, there actually new and only used once. no scratchs or smudges of any kind.
