Hard Drive Performance

I was wondering if bigger hard drivers have worse Performance than their smaller equivalents. My hard drive is 500gb sata, how much better would my computer b with a smaller, faster hard drive and would it have any effects on gaming?

Smaller isn't necessarily better. Spindle speed (i.e. RPM) seek times and other factors play into the overall equation.

As far as how a faster drive will affect performance, I notice much faster windows load times, (9 seconds) faster program load times, and overall snappier system response times. Games will load quicker, but you won't see any noticeable difference once in-game.

I hope that helps.

I depends on your definition of size. Apparently a 3.5" drive is slower than a 2.5". As for storage size, it shouldn't affect it, but what would I know?

Cache is also a big player, I noticed that some of the 500GB drives now have 32MB caches opposed to the 16MB that used to be seen.

I think the fastest drive(non-SSD, non-SCSI) is the new WD Velociraptor. A friend has one in his PC(because he's willing to go all out on the HDD but run a 7600GT:rolleyes:) and other than game load times, I didn't notice much.

thanx 4 the help guys. My computer is a bit slow loadin windows but once its running it seems to load up games fairly quickly, faster than my xbox 360does, which at the moment as the three red lights of death. I think i will stick with the hard drive i got if getting a faster one aint goin to improve in game performance.
