Hard drive problem - not being recognized and freezes disk management

Hi, recently I bought an external enclosure for my 320gb Maxtor IDE HDD. I installed the HDD into my external enclosure (Rosewill w/o driver needs) and I try to start it up on my computer. First thing I checked is if it was detected on Device Manager and it was. When I checked the properties, it said that there is "no driver installed for this device." I wasn't exactly sure what that meant since it was a HDD, but I went on to check disk management and noticed that the drive was nowhere to be found! The enclosure is USB 2.0 compatibility and the computer does detect it when i power on the enclosure but that's as far as it goes. My Computer does not show a new drive nor does disk management. And also, after several minutes of loading the enclosure, I tried once again to access disk management but this type it fails to connect to Logical Disk Manager service... Do anyone have any idea what is wrong or what I can do? Thanks a bunch!

Here's some extra info

I tried using softwares such as Partition Table Doctor and PartitionMagic. I used the PTD boot software to check out what's wrong with the hard drive. I received the error "Error Reading Partition Table Drive 01 Sector 00." This is getting quite frustrating as I tried many different software and adjustments to try to make it work but it has not. Do I have a defective HDD?
