Hard Drive Problem.

Hello I recently bought a new cooling cpu recently and ran into some problems.

PC Spec
Athlon 64 4000+ 2.4ghz single core San Diego
256mb PCI-e EVGA 7600GT (Zalman VGA cooler)
430 wat PSU
4gb PC3200 memory
Mother board Nforce 410/430 MCP
Vista Home Premium

I installed the cooler with no problems and so I boot it up leave it run in my bios for 30 mins and avg temp was 39-41c idle I can't complain so I went and booted up and started to write a email and the PC randomly rebooted.

First thing that comes to mind is the 430w psu isn't good enough. So I took out the 7600GT gpu with a Zalman VGA cooler installed out of the PC since if its a power issue then it shouldn't happen again. booted up and I got a CHKDSK error so it does its 3 step thing and I booted back to my desktop. 1 minute of idle it crashes and reboots...I boot up HL2 or WoW instant reboot. Its like its hungry for power.

So I remove it...put the stock cooler back on.

So I am like ok this shouldn't crash again......I booted up HL2 instant reboot....idle for 1 min reboot. What the hell could be wrong here?

So after 2 hours of putting my old sink back on (stock) and trying other ideas I start reading and they say it could be a corrupted file in the HD so I format. I get this error when I start the format.

So I try a format again and my C and H drive is 100% wiped and the only option was "151gb RAW" so I started a new format.

So I start a format at the end I get a new error. This is after it deletes/installs the base files not the actual windows.

I am banking my HD is ruined but I thought id post perhaps someone here will have a better idea of if it can be fixed.

Also I get the same error if I try to format again.

if any information is needed lemme know I will hunt it down.

Those look too much like memory errors besides another item overheating like the video card. The one way to see if you have a bad drive would be to try another if you have one lying around. If Windows goes right on you'll then know the drive is toast.

Different things can cause sudden restarts including the battery on the board itself if that is now going on you. If you have been the system for a year or more look into the $2-$3 item along with running memtest and using a drive diagnostics tool from the manufacturer.
 
Well I don't have one lying around but I know one I can borrow. Thanks will try the memory test and check the HD issue.
 
Hopefully you will know if it is something not as costly as hardware. But any drive borrowed would be for the quick test to rule that or something else out.
 
Well ok I just put in a new HD with no problems from a friend...instant reboot right after the "windows load"

Took the memory and used it on his PC and it worked fine. The Memtest program doesn't get a chance to boot up with my PC.

If the battery on the board is weak or the bios needs an update to correct a problem those a pair of other things to look at. Memtest has to be left running for some time to really stress test the memory over a period of hours.

I was seeing a number of problems on one old board where sudden restarts, high cpu temps, memory errors, and other things were looked at until one I had to lower the fsb in order to the system boot up. The cpu by that time had reached the max temp.

Recently having put a few builds together since then the old case was put together again with what? a new battery to then see the cpu running like nothing ever happened? That board loved batteries apparently! It's a crazy long shot but you never know.
 
Most of those now are 2032 by number. Different brands see CR 2032 or CL 2032 for Eveready, DL 2032 for Duracell. etc. but taking the battery along to match it up will help. Those are coin sized lithium batteries common in watch/jewelry and calculator sections as well as battery racks in large retail stores as well as at Radio Shack.

It never hurts to one or two those onhand. But lately I ran into two different systems that were seeing identical problems with XP where both refused to boot. Upon attempting repair installs and simply writing to the drives... nothing!

Yet you could read and copy files off of them easy enough and even delete the primaries. Take the drive along to see if someone can rescue some files for you while you are at it.
 
Yeah you wont believe this one though. I took a break ran a mile with my dog and came back in turned on my PC and did 1 more format...it not only did it without a problem but I installed the GPU+ the new cpu cooler I bought and it is all running without any problems at all.

Not sure wtf changed but I wont argue. I am still going to change that battery just to be safe the PC is about 1 years old or so.

Thanks again for all your help PC EyE very much appreciate it. With luck this problem was just a corrupted file in the HD. Going to run that mem test soon as my buddy wakes up.

Sadly only a dvd burner and cd-rom drive need a cd-rw for the disk burn.

Once you took a break the drive cooled off for a bit and now seems to work ok? You may want to hold off a bit and see how things go for a few days. Keep a good eye on the drive temps with SpeedFan or another program that displays those.

Memtest has both floppy and cd-r not cd-rw files to download. But you have to let sit and run for several hours to really see what comes up. As far as the errors seen all I could find on those especially the last was seen with XP prior to and upon installing SP1 when that first came out. See how things go anyways.
 
Well ran the mem test for about 8 hours while I was at work and no errors poped up so its good.
Changed the battery last night on my motherboard.

I had a single reboot today about 10 mins ago but it came back with a error so it might be another problem not related to this one. Perhaps you have a idea of what the error was. Doing some google searches now on it.

Just by chance you didnt unplug your 4 pin CPU power connector while installing your heatsink and forget to plug it back in?
 
No sir I double checked all my parts about 5 times last time I was in it. Double checked after the reboot issue as well :)

Also after reading the mini dump file it seems that Rtkhdaud.sys was causing the issue...so might just need to update it. crappy on board cards ftw.

Realtek... Realtek... Realtek... Why does that name sound all too familiar? hhhmm... People have more problems with Realtek onboard drivers then seen with any other onboard sound! Sounds like it's time to find a good expansion card and disable the onboard altogether!
 
Yeah driver was 3 years out of date...now I just sit back and see if it happens again.

But I can't complain...beats 1 min after start up reboots ^-^
 
One thing to try would be disabling the onboard in the device manager and restarting to see if the system sees that without the driver being loaded and active. 3yrs. is a long time with any driver set to start with. By that amount of time I've either reinstalled Windows on a fresh primary or upgraded out of one case here.
