Hard drive problem

I just got a new internal hd for my 2000 dell computer...First the computer came with a Western digital 40 gig when it was new. The new hd is a western digital 160 gig. I set up the hd on the same ribbon as the old hd and set that hd as master, the new hd to slave. i installed the program that sets up the hd and updated my BIOS. I upgraded from Windows ME to Windows 2000 about a year ago. ---- My problem is that the drive works fine where I can put files on the drive and it is recognized and seems that it is working correctly the only problem that I have is that when I go to Start -> Shutdown what happens is that the computer seems like it is going to shutdown (the screen goes black) then all of a sudden it boots back up. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

yes it detects that there is 160 gigs...the only problem that i have is that it keeps booting back up when i go to start-> shutdown. to be very exact when i go to start shutdown, it seems like it is going to shutdown (it says saving settings and goes to a black screen) but after that it boots back up.

the only (temporary) solution i can think of right now is just to shutdown as you do normally, but when you get to that black screen press the power button on the front of your computer, to switch it off. also check that you havent inadvertantly selected restart by mistake.

the above is a bit safer than say, just pressing the power button.

could be.., run scandisk as well. also go to control panel, system properties, advanced, settings for startup and recovery and deselect on system failure automatically restart. this could help. on my old comp when it crashed and i switched it off by the button, then it would restart by itself 5 mins later.

That is what i do....i shutdown then when it starts to boot up i hit the power...and made sure each time that it wasnt a stupid mistake like pressing the restart button. Thanks for the info i will go and try that.

do yo have Adaptec Easy CD Creator installed by any chance. I had the same problem with windows 2000 and found a article on easy cd creator causing this problem and when I updated my easy cd creator it fixed the problem.

did i tell you to go into the bios and look for boot settings? check that the computer doesnt auto reboot after failure or something.

i did all of the helpful ideas that people have given me to help solve the problem but didnt get anywhere.....any more help?
