I got a message when i restarted my computer today. It says something like SMART detected hard disk failure plz back up your file. So i have a computer that is about 5 yrs old it is a Toshiba a205-4704 it has 120 gb hard drive and has 1 gb of ram. i have been planing for a ram up grade. I have 3 questions. 1. is there anyway to fix this error, i have tried to run a disk check but when it gets to the fifth stage of the check and gets to about 18% then doesn't go any further. it doesn't sound like the computer is freezing or locking up? If I do a factory reset with the disks will this fix it? 2. If i was to get a new hard drive since i don't have a window disk because it was preloaded on the hard drive that is in the computer. do i have to buy a new operating system or is there some way to load it on the new hard drive i still have the security key form the original OS? 3. or should i just call it quits and get another computer?

If you are getting a smart error, just get a new drive. You may be able to order recovery cd's through toshiba. Enter the laptop information at this site to see if you can order the cd's.

The smart code warning tells you when the harddrive performace drops below a certain level and it may fail, it may last a week or two - it may last a year, but it will fail.
Only option is new drive as harddrives are not repairable (unless you have a specialised workshop and knowledge)
