Hard drive problems

Hello Everyone!
I recently installed an old 160GB IDE hard drive in my comp along with my 250GB sata2 and a dvd burner. since my mobo didn't have primary and secondary Ide channels, I just put the hard drive on slave with the dvd burner. I have the DVD set to MAster and the IDE hd set to slave. My WD SATA2 250GB 16mb dosen't seem to have any jumper settings to slave or master, and the BIOS doesn't have anyway to change the boot order, so the Maxtor IDE hd always boots Windows ME (booooooooooo) instead of my WD SATA booting XP Pro. any suggestions?

ooo, i tend to think an ata and sata dont always get along.

.........im sorry, i just drew a blank. uh, try reformatting the maxtor. geez, i really dont know, those two drives seem reaaallly different.

Well someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the whole purpose of SATA was to not only make the connection faster, but eliminate the whole master/slave relationship between devices. And also, when there is a master/slave relationship, shouldnt you have the HD as master and the DVD as slave.....sorry if i sound off at any point during this I'm tired..... Ok half asleep, i'm goin to bed.

There should be an option to change it in the BIOS, even if it's not in the boot order. You may have to select a primary hard drive elsewhere. Look through your motherboard manual.

If you want to boot from your sata drive you will have to set it up in your bios options and also you will need to install the driver for it when you install XP. You will need to make a floppy with the sata drivers on it from the motherboard cd. Put the xp cd into the cdrom drive and let it boot to it and press F6 at the beginning when it starts to load files. insert floppy drive when asked so it can load sata drivers and follow the prompts.

so I have to install windows on the old hd to work, or reinstall xp on the 250 to have it work?

They come on the motherboard cd. Is this a store bought computer or custom build? What motherboard do you have?
