hard drive problems

computer will not recognise any of my hard drives 2 drives are installed at any one time cannot get passed bios screen, operating system is xp pro and when i put xp disc in pc it says there is no hard drive detected any help will be much appreciated.
 
well we need more info, but i had a similar problem and i just reset my mobo took out the battery cause it would not recognise HD, so i wnet and got a 31/2 floppy with a boot on it and i was gonna use that but it just started working on its own, so sometimes its just a matter of giving bios few starts 2 recognize
 
After booting with the installation cd you can go to the recovery console by pressing the "R" option prior to answering yes to the install now option. Once at the recovery prompt try the "FIXMBR" and "FIXBOOT" commands. If you still don't see a normal boot afterwards try a different drive cable to see if that is the problem.
 
i doubt its a cord but its always a good idea to test little things liek that, and ive never even ehard of commands like that im gonna copy and paste that for future refference

When the master boot record is damaged or altered in some way you can also boot up with an old WIN 98 or ME floppy and type "fdisk /mbr" at the dos prompt on an XP system. Those are some basic troubleshooting steps there.
 
mb is asus p4pe i cant get past the bios screen windows xp says setup did not find any hard drives installed on your pc .. also tried the boot 98 disk to no avail and the drive is not spinning i have four drives none can be recognised.someone suggested that i make the drive cable direct ,no joy there either. i will try a new ribbon but don,t think it will work, as the ribbon is pretty new. please keep posting guys ,i,m at my wits end
 
Bios problem? I had a similar problem on the old board come up after the cpu overheated and eventually the hard drive wasn't seen at all. With the clicking sounds heard I figured the hard drive was toast. However when Windows was reinstelled the drive suddenly reappeared. Windows would lock up right when reaching the desktop until the fsb was lowered.from the 200mhz to 166mhz as seen in the bios.
 
What did you find there? everyone will be wondering about. Glad to see you got it running. Was it a setting needing change or an update?
