Dunno if anyone remembers my post from a while back about my failing Western digital hard drive i had as storage?

I had to remove it as it was stopping my system from booting normaly and its been in my closit since.

Well i put it inside my External HDD enclousure today to see if i can at leat retrieve some data off it,now its showing and picked up by Windows but when i try to access it it says "You need to format the disk before you can use it"

But obviusly i dont want to do that as i would loose the data and still probably end up with nothing.

Is there anyway of gaining access to this drive and copying all the files?

Thanks for all replies :good:

I managed to recover all date on this drive :):good:

The drive doesnt show up now i think its finaly died :P

Good stuff. I was going to suggest looking at it with a data recovery program but I'm guessing you just did that and got most/all of your stuff off it?

Yeah i got all data off it,i thought it would give me an error or just not show up but i actually got into the drive and copy and pasted everything to my main pc.

the drive stops my system from booting if its plugged in (Internally) so I took my new external hdd out and put the old one in its enclosure and bam it worked.

it doesn't now though.....doesn't show up or spin up so i guess i was lucky to get everything from it.

Now i can put my new drive back in its external enclosure and have fun destroying this old one :D

Methods for destroying a hard drive? I was going to grind the platters away :D

Good thing you got everything. That can be quite scary. I had that happen with a Seagate of mine not too long ago. This is why I have more than one copy of my backup files as I don't trust hard drive anymore.
